' NYP is a short-season league. It stars right after the draft. There is high A, low A, short-season, and rookie league. I've been following minor league baseball since I was 10 years old, now you're to tell me there is no high A or low A. That's awesome. You might want to email Baseball America, clue them in too. You can pull six players out of your ass yet there are 100's of times as many players with those stats who never amounted to anything. Your point is so well taken because I declared Mier a bust and tried to run him out on a rail for sucking so much, RIGHT?
You might want to consider reading comprehension classes. I never said any such thing. I said there are, in addition to low A and high A (which are actually just eponyms), just plain old A level leagues. The fact that the Astros only have two full season A league teams doesn't make that condition universal. And if you want to start comparing whose been watching baseball longer, I would certainly be willing to play, with a reasonable confidence that you won't win. I said that the numbers at this point are irrelevant as an indicator of whether he will be a bust of a first round draft pick, and you seemed to strongly disagree. So I'm not entirely sure what you want, but it is clear that you think it is appropriate to pass judgment him at this point.
Jose Altuve went 4-for-5 last night with 2 HR. The little guy continues to impress. J.D. Martinez also went 4-for-5 with a 2B. He's on at least a 10-game hitting streak and continues to dominate the SAL in most offensive categories. Clemens continues to roll at Corpus. Over his last 10 games: .343/.465/.629. He's 1st in the Texas League in HR and 3rd in OPS. Castro hit his 3rd HR of the season. He's been hitting well for about 3 weeks now. Over his last 10: .343/.395/.543 (AVG/OBP/SLG)
I really hope they will move J.D. up to Corpus soon so he can start in AAA 1st part of next season and be ready for a mid summer 2011 call up (assuming either Lee or Pence is gone). He has absolutely destroyed all single A levels. His statistics for 560+ at bats across Single A levels have been nice looking: BA 361 OBP 418 SLG 592 OBP+SLG 1010 19 HRS 100 runs 101 RBIs
Another guy I don't understand why he hasn't be promoted is Douglas Arguello of Corpus. He spent last year in AA and had a ERA of 3.36. For some reason he is spending another year there and has a ERA of 2.73 so far.
That may be the case but he is 25 years old, left-handed and has good control. You look at some of the starters in Round Rock and they are journeyman. Andy Van Hekken, Shaun Loux, and Roy Corcoran are 30 years old. Arguello has more upside than them.
Yeah. That is a debate between the has-beens vs. the never-was. 140% of zero is still zero. I loved me some Jack Castle a couple of years ago. I made all the same arguments. But I should have had enough sense to recognize that no matter how good his minor league numbers were, if your fastball is an 88 mph straight arrow, you have absolutely no "upside" in the majors, even if you completely dominate the minors.

Jordan Lyles pitched 7 innings and give up no runs while striking out 11 tonight. He is only 19 years and dominating at AA. He should be competing for a starting spot in the big leagues next year.
Robert Donovan has been fantastic the last couple of months. Looking at his last 7 starts, he's only allowed 5 runs in them! Hopefully he skips lancaster and goes to CC next year. His era and WHIP compare to Lyles' stats this year. Doesn't get many strikeouts. Maybe he's a groundball pitcher. Anybody know anything about him?
ha! I was pulling hard for that guy (and I knew better...). The old "underdog"/"unlikely success" thing. Didn't he have a couple fill-in starts for the big club?
That would make him like most of last years Lexington rotation. Those guys are now getting blasted in Lancaster.
I'm sorry, but what? "I don't really have a very hard fastball, but I like to locate and use both sides of the plate." followed by: "I hadn't had a good curveball for most of the year....Coming into this year, I just wanted to work on my curveball, make that a more consistent pitch," Lyles said. "Up 'til now, it hasn't been too great." http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/...18&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp&partnerId=rss_hou How consistent is his release point on his curve? Can he spot his cutter/slider yet? Is his change a plus pitch yet? Do tell. What do you think a guy with a decent fastball but outstanding control should work on? He is 19. Slow your roll. Statsheet scouting rocks.
Just because those sports writers are saying he might make it to the majors next year, that doesn't mean its gonna happen. This is the Astros people. That don't promote people til they are 25-26. He'll be lucky if he'll make it by 23. The Sros are a blackhole for prospects.
That's only for bad prospects. It's obvious, unless something happens, that Lyles will be in the pros at 20-21. He'll likely start next season in AAA and will get promoted towards the end of the year.
