is it respect, or just attention. he's the LOUDEST guy here locally. want a houston sports reporters' opinion?? go ask that Justice guy. the problem is, as you say, the more times you pull this kind of Vecsey routine, the less you're taken seriously. i wonder if the national media knows of his fascination with Chris Duhon or his brilliant thoughts on benching Jeff Kent??

    Sponsor makes plea to Beltran
Houston company to run ads in San Juan Star
    By Alyson Footer / MLB.com

Carlos Beltran is spending the offseason in his native Puerto Rico. (Al Behrman/AP)

HOUSTON -- When his 2004 season ended with Game 7 loss to the Cardinals in the NLCS, Carlos Beltran headed to his native Puerto Rico with absolutely no doubts regarding how the Astros fans felt about him.
Dozens of signs decorated Minute Maid Park throughout the playoffs, with messages -- make that pleas -- for Beltran, soon to be a free agent, to remain in Houston beyond the '04 season.

One clever fan even spoofed the presidential election, making a sign that read, "Beltran for center field. Four more years."

Now that the Hot Stove season is reaching a boiling point, Beltran is about to be reminded of the way Houstonians think of him and how much they want him to re-sign with the Astros.

Everyone's Internet, an Astros corporate sponsor, has bought full-page color ads that will run Sunday in the San Juan Star and its affiliated newspapers. The ad is a picture of a baseball and it says, in English and Spanish, "Dear Carlos Beltran, EV1 and the people of Houston love you. Please stay!"

"He's in Puerto Rico right now, and the only way to get a hold of him, we thought, was through the newspaper in Puerto Rico," Roy Marsh, Everyone's Internet's chief financial officer, told KRIV-TV in Houston. "So we've taken out full page ads in Sunday's San Juan Star, in the English version and the Spanish version, asking Carlos to stay in Houston."

Marsh, whose company spent $11,000 to make this happen, knows there will be those who hear about this and roll their eyes.

"Sure, it's ridiculous," Marsh told KRIV. "But hopefully it will be something memorable. Hopefully in Puerto Rico, the friends of Carlos and his wife will pick up the paper and call them and say 'Hey, that was cute. Somebody really cares up there.'"

It doesn't end there. Marsh said he and his company will purchase follow-up ads in the San Juan Star until Beltran makes a decision. Marsh said he has already received permission from Astros first baseman Jeff Bagwell to include his name in any future ads asking Beltran to stay.

I just read that the Yankees may terminate Jason Giambis 100 million dollar contract. Do you guys think this will be bad for the Astros in the sense that it will allow the Yankees to make an offer for Beltran that is closer to Boras 200 million dollar price range?

They will cut him...i could easily see the contract being voided. I am hoping that it willmake the Yankees go after Sexson or Delgado and spend their money there...I cant see them living with Travis Lee or John Olreud at 1B

Link, please. Are you talking about the ESPN article, because there's no quote in there from the Yankees - just speculation by the article writer. The Yankees don't have a prayer of terminating the deal without some proof other than leaked grand jury testimony that Giambi was on steroids - and even then it would be in for a major fight. They won't be free of his contract in any event soon enough to impact the Beltran sweepstakes.

Ah, same article I read. Just speculation. The only quote by the Yankees was

"We have met with the commissioner's office today and will continue to work with them to obtain all of the facts in this matter,'' Yankees president Randy Levine said. "We have made no decisions and will keep all of our options open.''

What ticks me off about the Giambi situation is this. If last season he had an all-star caliber year, this wouldn't even be an issue. But because he had medical problems and has some health issues, the Yankees are going to use this to try and dump his contract. Now if only someone would come out and say "Kevin Brown is a cokehead" the Yankees would be in hog heaven.

One thing that concerns me is if the Yankees do indeed terminate Giambi's contract they may look as Carlos Beltran as someone who could be promoted as 'The Natural' and someone who can clean up this dark mark on their organization left by Giambi and possibly Sheffield. because right now, Beltran has no clouds of suspicion floating over his head, and could be considered the best baseball player not on drugs, 'the natural'. that could go a long way in getting the yanks to flirt with that 200 million contract Boras is out for.

When ESPN first broke the story, Buster Olney was interviewed- he's supposedly particularly close to the Yankees.

He claimed the Yanks will look into voiding the contract, but it's unlikely to be allowed by the player's union, and apparently since MLB didn't find it, it will be very hard to do.

I agree that if they get his contract voided, that's bad news on the Beltran front for us. OTOH, the Yanks may have just found a new hole they need to fill before pursuing Beltran.

It is the what-have-you-done-for-me-lately mentality at work. You are loved, showered with love and protected while you are on top and shining.

But my guess is that with the very powerful player's union and solid lawyers behind Jason, the Yankees will not be able to get out of Jason's contract. The Yankees deserve it. They still want to move Brown. He could still play at a high level - I will definitely not rule that out.

How can you void a contract based on edvidence that nobody is supposed to know exists. If that isn't breaking the law I don't know what is.

And now that I think about it, this would preclude MLB from acting against Barry Bonds records. If the BALCO testimony is gagged then it doesn't really exist.

Wouldn't they be forced to modify the records if an overwhelming majority of fans demanded it? It can't be used as evidence in a trial but it is a go for the court of public opinion.

I think the fans are like shareholders in a company, if we demand an * by Bonds records, wouldn't they have to comply, or atleast try to?
