Hmm, and we could have signed Pettitte without having to give up anybody?

I don't know about this, but at least Jennings will be here more than 1-2 years, assuming we can sign him.

Dude, I could give two sh*ts about that tool Taveras. The fact is that Jennings wasn't worth our TOP pitching prospect. This trade was beyond stupid -> Jennings isn't going to scare anyone and he's nothing more than solid. You never mortgage your franchise for a short-term gain. Look what happened when the Mets traded Kazmir.

Not having to give up Burke, or Wheeler in the bullpen makes this a good trade for a #2 pitcher. This is all contingent on Jennings resigning, of course.

Jennings has no upside. He's not dominant. Hirsh is the next Kazmir.

All I know is that the Astros have made some positive moves to improve our staff this year. Like RM95 said, Im not really cool running out Hirsh and Buckholz out there as my 3 and 4. Jennings is a legit starter with an inflated Colorado ERA.

You have absolutely no way of knowing that. You're simply talking out of your ass. That 6.04 era last year was simply Kazmirish.

How did we give up a lot?

Willy? (a horrible leadoff hitter who plays solid CF defense, but not gold glove defense).

Buchholz? (projecting more as a bullpen guy with every start where he looks good for 2 innings, and then explodes... that includes how he ended the year at AAA, where Albers, Hirsh, and SAMPSON got the call over him).

Hirsh? (I agree... he's the one guy who has potential... but its still unrelaized. If they can re-sign Jennings, a guy who has proven he can throw 200 innings in a season, it can be a very good deal for the Astros.)

Either way, they gave up 3 prospects for 1 average SP... who has the potential to get better now that he's no longer in Colorado.

Yes, and with Kazmir they win the World Series. That's exactly the kind of short-sighted thinking that kills a franchise.

Patton is the Astros' Kazmir... he's the top pitching prospect.

Albers is the most MLB-ready pitcher... and will likely be the #4 or #5 guy.

actually can add bagwell's contract to that too. I'm not ecstatic with this move, but I do think Jennings is a nice pitcher.

As for the money, this off-season is nowhere near over. I just like this trade in particular assuming Jennings sign an extension. My opinion of Hirsh and Bucholtz is not high at all, but I at least somewhat trust Hirsh to be somewhat decent. I do expect Jennings to be a good pitcher with a good defense behind him.

As for the idea of Scott in Center, that won't happen often, but Burke did show an ability to play CF well and have gotten good jumps at balls hit towards CF. The off-season is still going and I for one would rather let things unravel before joining an angry mob.

Agreed, that Jennings is an alright starter, but that doesn't change the fact that Purpura got ass-raped in this deal.

Your math is hilarious. You subtract everyone who is outgoing since the Lee/Williams signings. Except Lee/Williams signed for around 22 million. But let's ignore that.

    Stupid fat Purpura.

The offseason isn't over. According to Purpura himself, moving Willy T has a lot to do with Hunter Pence. Given 100 mill to Lee, the studliness of Luke Scott, where is Pence going to play? Center Field. For an organization maligned for bringing people along slowly, they clear out playing time for Burke, and eventually Pence, and it's to save money?

What will be hilarious is if the Astros sign Jennings and a guy like Suppan for combined what Pettitte is making - and I wouldn't be shocked if both of them out pitch Andy.

Yeah but Hirsh and Buckholz are going to haunt us for years to come in Colorado, just like Mike Hampton did when we didnt resign him.

Astros are basically selling their sole this year to compete....They overpaid Lee, and they overtraded for Jennings.....but u know what? It might actually work

Remember, there is no San Antonio, Phoenix, or Dallas in the NL

Not sure about how I feel about this trade as I am not familiar with Jennings. One thing is very clear if you look at his numbers - his statistics both at Coors and on the road are almost exactly the same. I think that he probably wasn't as affected by Coors as some others if he really is the sinkerball guy everybody says.

I wouldn't expect a big 'leaving Coors' effect. Though of course this might mean that he adjusts to the Crawford boxes without missing a beat.
