I'd be fine with Kazmir for 3 years; but it sounds like enough teams are going after him that someone will shell out either 4 or 5 years for him. If that's the case, then I suspect Luhnow will take a pass. He'll need to pay Keuchel serious money in 2018, Altuve in 2019 and Springer in 2020 (assuming, of course, that the team decides to keep all these guys).
Crane mentioned today in an interview that the Astros are going after another SP...I guess its probably coming down to Gallardo, Kazmir and...
Yea it's got to be one of those two, unless they are looking at trade options And as I said, I'd much prefer Kazmir over Gallardo, mainly because he has higher upside, but also it's like a Kazmir/pick combo vs Gallardo
Yea he fits the budget, but I can't see Luhnow giving up a pick unless it's for someone he really thinks is a difference maker
Deal just needs to be priced to account for lose of pick. Since he depends on weak contact and throws soft toss, Astros may be able to get him at a rate lower than he's worth due to lack of sex appeal.
Yea you may be right, but I'd prefer to go into the season with what we have rather than lose the pick for a guy like that. Then go after someone in trade in season if needed. Of course if Chen is someone they see something in that they could develop into being a lot better, then it would make sense
I do think Kazmir is the likelier signing due to draft choice. Wei-Yin Chen, though, is probably top arm left on market....not the upside of Kazmir, but likelier to have a good season.
at this point looking at the guys left available, id be most happy to take a chance on Cliff Lee seeing as Scott Feldman is a stong fall back plan. I understand he missed all of 2015, but he only pitched about 20 less innings than jose fernandez between 2014-2015. His track record of performance is truly top tier. Since 2007 hes never had a FIP higher than 3.15 and in the 80 innings he pitched in 2014 he had a 2.96 His age goes against him even though he has yet to show diminished returns on the mound. Cliff Lee will be 37 next season and its natural to expect declining perfomance but its also not impossible that he will avoid those declines. Last year there were 12 guys who threw 100+ innings at around that age. Its obviously a high risk move, but I think for 10 million 1 year or 16 over 2 could be a tolerable downside. I dont know that its really all that much riskier than the 32 million given to John Lackey for the next two years and the upside is much greater. maybe you could utilize 6 guys till June to pace everyone but Keuchel. The two birds you'd be aiming for with that stone could theoretically be managing Mccullers IPs and allowing Feldman to build some trade value in a best case scenario.
How about Wheeler and Curtis Granderson from the Mets for Springer? Yes, Wheeler coming off Tommy John surgery and won't be really until June, but look at what Matt Harvey did last season after the same surgery. We may be getting a future ace.
And we may be giving up an All-Star RF. Granderson will be 35 when the season starts. He's got a good eye, but we can't afford to trade Springer for an unproven pitcher and aged outfield bat. I do like Wheeler, but sheesh, not at that price.
How about the Dark Knight? The Mets Fans are not too happy with him and the ownership may want to trade him before he get into his FA year.
