It's worth it to me because it means Crane wants to extend this window of contention. You don't sign Hader to a 5-year deal worth that amount if you think 2024 is your last hurrah.

If this is the truth, need to build that Lovie Smith statue at NRG and a duplicate at MMP

    Yes I’m kidding :)

Now go get another bat and we're ready to take it back.

I don't follow the offseason much anymore, but I'd think/guess that an in-season addition of an impact bat is more likely.

I am pleasantly surprised. I think the Graveman injury and the high cost of retaining Nerris might be blessings in disguise leading to this signing.
Once again, props to Nook with the intel on this going back for months. Also, props to Jim Crane.

They included Hader in the Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers trade back in 2015. I’d been closely watching his development and he was blazing 100 mph with good control. Hader was excelling where Appel was floundering, if they wanted to, they could have held onto Hader, the minor league system back then was deep enough.

Astros sent to Milwaukee Bret Philips, Domingo Santana, Adrian Houser, and Hader.

It was a trade that seriously imploded on the Astros, as Gomez was a zero, Mike Fiers didn’t even make the 2017 playoff roster - and ultimately blabbed about the trash can stuff. Meanwhile Hader was just a stud Closer since he joined the ML club.

Overall, Milwaukee won that trade big time. All 4 guys the Astros sent had ML careers - a superstar, a back of the rotation starter in Houser, a guy in Phillips that keeps chugging along with his defense, and even Domingo looked for a while to be quite impressive. Three of them were on a ML team in 2023. But even Domingo Santana looked promising for a while, find’s himself playing in Japan since 2020 or 2021.

I am pleased too. Nerris is 35 years old, and is set to be making 17 + million for the next 3 years. I’d rather have a much younger Hader at 19 million.
