WTF? I like Shoo, but he shouldn't be getting anything like that type of money. Ellsbury shouldn't be getting that kind of money either, but that's the benefit of being the Yankees. You can do that kind of stuff without much penalty.
He will be 32 in the middle of next season. Don't get me wrong I'm all for these looser purse strings, and Shin-Soo has been very good. But that's a bad deal for the Astros if they make it.
I think this is all Boras linking Choo to the Astros, and trying to drive up his price. I really hope the Rangers sign this 31 year old to a 6 or 7 year deal. As an Astros fan, that would make me real happy.

Yeah but Carlos Lee was special. He was the Hamburglar even before he signed with us. Shoo-Choo is more like Ichiro Suzuki, he can produce at almost any age.
7 years $140 mil is actually reasonable for Choo. Check out this article: http://www.obstructedview.net/commentary-and-analysis/the-case-for-7140-on-choo.html
I think he can get a lot more than that. Baseball contracts are ridiculous and he actually walks a lot.
Does this chart take into consideration injury risk? (even for a normal player, non high risk injury player) Also, it seems like this assumes all "wins" are valued equally at the $6 or $7 mil number mentioned. I would argue that not all wins have the same value. Wins 50 to 60 may be valued closer to $4 mil as wins 95 to 100 may be closer to $10 mil, but I don't know exactly how these numbers are constructed, just offering a caution before using this as a determination of "fair value" for a contract.
Buster Olney just said that he thinks the Astros will land Choo. He thinks Astros will over pay him like they did for Scott Feldman. It's nice to hear our name with one of the biggest free agents this off season.
BB beat me to it. Buster Olney: He'll land with the Astros. Rangers are interested. The Astros will overpay him the way they did Scott Feldman because there's not a big volume of bidders out there. Tim Kurkjian: Choo will end up with the Rangers. They have a lot of money to spend. They could sign Cruz instead but they'll end up with one or the other.
Last season he complained about us not spending money, now he's bashing us for overpaying. I love adding him to the team...have a feeling that the terms of the contract are going to be a little unsettling though. Maybe Tanaka wants to come play with a fellow high-profile Asian??
Olney was complaining earlier that the Astros destroyed the market for Starting pitching because of the Scott Feldman deal. You're absolutely right "Astros are a disgrace to the game for not spending enough money" "The Astros are overspending ruining the market" Schilling said he thought the Astros would get Tanaka and would surprise Baseball this year(Not World Series bound but much better than what everyone will expect)
Holy crap...Schilling said that today? I feel like if they sign Choo and Tanaka, they really won't have to add a significant FA for years. Just bring the youngsters up gradually, tweak the pen, and make some trades. It's disappointing about Olney, because I have him and Jayson Stark way high on my list of sports media figures that I respect.
Think he might mean the only way the Astros can land a player that other teams are interested in is by overbidding, and they have the ability to beat out a low volume of bidders for a player, but are priced out when too many teams are in the fray.
