Because of the media circus that follows him, Bonds is a much more destructive cancer than Carl Everett or Kent. A clubhouse can ignore Jeff Kent pretty easily. It's tough to ignore Bonds and the 30 reporters following him.
Exactly. There were mucho grumblings out of San Fran this year by teammates & management about the sideshow. Why don't the Giants want him back? Bagwell's not around to keep things in order either. And since there's not a single credible report even remotely linking Bonds to the Stros, is this really worth discussing? Sorry if I jumped on ya, pgab.
No way the Astros sign him ... I honestly think he is only worth the money to 1) A team in the AL that needs a good DH to put them over the top or 2) A weaker team that really needs to sell tickets. He will sell tickets when he is going for this record, but I don't believe he can make a team that much better (considering the $$ spent) while playing in the field as you know he is going to break down several times during the year.
If he is a "plan B" (its that time of year again u know ) then fine....but i hope we dont forgo trying to sign Sori or Lee in favor of Bonds. I wonder what Clemens/Pettitte would think of Bonds...whether or not it would sway them to come back or run the other way.
Did they actually say rumor? It sounded like it was just an idea that Ted Deluca had and was being discussed. They are talking about it on 610 now as well.
yeah..i'm confused on that, too. they were just throwing out stuff on this afternoon on 790....entertaining "what if's".
i can't imagine this ever happening with this team.. not unless the entire front office, up to the owner, has changed. Barry Bonds' character issues are on a whole different level compared to the Everetts and Kents of the past. Bonds has potential lawsuits surrounding him.. he's THE biggest story in baseball for 1/2 the year (even if we all hate hearing it).. and it's still unknown whether he cheated the game to attain some of the highest honors it has.
Yep, Dalati & Lopez just talking. Only meaningful reports have him linked to San Diego or Oakland. Expect this question to be included in Footer's next mailbag, though. Most denizens of sportsradio & the interweb don't really quibble over the difference between idle gossip & reality. Did you see her response to the mlbtraderumors Huff crap? Priceless.
I always see Bonds have his HR pulled or center... but he can just punch it in the CB every now and then...
To those who think Bonds is a cheater: 1) MLB never said he was and I think they have A LOT more info than you. 2) If Bonds cheated, so did a lot of players. Jeff Bagwell cheated if Barry did. They both 'got big' around the same time. 3) Bonds is different and doesn't like the media. The same media that implicated Bonds without trial also implicated Iraq and Afghanistan without a trial. I'm not saying that Bonds didn't cheat, I'm not saying that Iraq and Afghanistan were saints, I'm saying that the media acts like judge and juror, yet they break the law when they're doing coke off the stainless steal toliet paper dispensor and coming out thinking they're AWESOME. 4) Bonds is a great player. If he sucks as a teammate, trade him. If he's helping the club win, he's an Astro! 5) The media is just like everyone else, imperfect. Why trust them like your life is on the line when they talk about Barry?
^^^^^ Bonds himself has admitted using "The Cream" and "The Clear". Of course he denied knowing they were steroids.
I agree that others have more information than us. And I believe that, as I stated before, it's an unknown on whether he cheated or not. But just because MLB couldn't prove that Bonds cheated (which is the reason they wouldn't asser that he had, as you said)...doesn't mean he DIDN'T cheat. It just means they couldn't prove for sure that he did. (Or didn't want to...but that's another argument). Also, you're the one against other people's assumptions, it seems.. but here you are stating "Jeff Bagwell cheated if Barry did." I understand what you're saying, but you can't make blanket statements like that. Especially if you're trying to get people to stop making assumptions in the same post.. Bonds is no longer a "great player". Take a look at what he did last year.. and take a look at his defensive ability.. and his ability to stay on the field.
I find myself a little torn...just a little. As a lifelong Astro fan almost nothing would make me happier than a World Series title. But to me Barry Bonds is THE posterboy about what has gone sour with Major League Baseball...Our National Pastime. So I can't with a clear conscience support his acquisition. Does that mean it won't happen? No way? Drayton is a PR lovin machine(a great business man!) who also wants to win it all. I wouldn't completely dismiss it.
MAN! I hate Bonds. I will have to find a new team. He is a disgrace to the game. I would go to the stadium to boo him every at bat, but then I would be supporting the Astros. Hmm, dilemma. Please don't do something like this 'Stros. Bonds is a disgrace. I hope this rumor is just a ploy to punish Bonds; sign him then bench him.
It's not unknown if Bonds cheated. He did. There's not doubt. It's in the grand jury testimony. He took the cream and the clear. He denied knowing they were performance enhancing, saying he thought they were linseed oil. Like linseed oil makes you put on 30 pounds of muscle.
If he somehow cost less than 10 mill for 1 or 2 years, I'd do it. That's a much smarter deal than Lee for 15 mill a year for 6-7 years. Bottom line is that this team isn't going anywhere without a good signing.
We can find better ways to spend our money. We already had a guy last year sitting on the DL making $18 million (even though we liked him), we don't need to replace him. He's a liability in the field and he's not going to stay healthy long enough to help us. His only chance is being a DH. Not that I would want him anyway, even if he could stay healthy.
