He turned down 6/150 with Yankees. What does Snell want? He was solid to average 2019-2022. Exceptional in 2018, 2023. You could easily pay snell 30 million for a 2021 4.20 era campaign. This guy is all over the map in performance
Isn't there a deadline in which the draft pick penalty on a QO player no longer applies? Didn't that happen with Keuchel?
Penalties for signing players who reject their QO Any team that signs a player who has rejected a qualifying offer is subject to the loss of one or more Draft picks. However, a team's highest first-round pick is exempt from forfeiture. (Players who are unsigned after the start of the MLB Draft in the year that follows the rejection of their qualifying offer are no longer tied to Draft pick compensation and can be signed without their new club needing to forfeit a Draft pick.)
Wow, I remember that but I don't remember who it was. Bo Porter did however play Sipp in the OF, so he could come back to the mound for LRL stuff. A very Tony LaRussa kind of move.
I think in the previous CBA, it no longer applied by 2nd month of the season, but I could be mistaken.
Yep. Brought up Joe Smith and Hector Rondon earlier for the great 2019 team (not really nobodies… but neither would have gotten an “appreciation” thread here either)…. And both of those guys were getting key outs in the playoffs.
Right! They used Josh James, Joe Biagini, Cionel Perez, Guduan and Cy Sneed (and McHugh and Framber, who also started a few but pitched about 40 games out of the pen...eta: 61 games, 8 starts each) to pitch those ~150 innings 120ish IP not counting McHuge, Framber and Urquidy Hell, Max Stassi faced 1 batter and got 1 out. Tyler White did not do so well in his pitching appearances.
Snell runs hot and cold because he can't get folks to chase. And therein lies the crux. So do you want to pay Jeckyl and Hyde. He's an upgrade. But he's unpredictable. A classic non chaser like Bregman probably kills him.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/spor...c-espn-karl-ravech-eduardo-perez/73000437007/ ≻ Two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell has informed the Houston Astros that he’s willing to sign a short-term deal to join them, but is seeking at least a two-year guarantee for $66 million, that includes an opt-out after the 2024 season. The Astros are intrigued, club officials says, but are the latest team to balk at his asking price. The Astros, who began exchanging proposals with agent Scott Boras earlier in the week, are waiting to see if the price-tag drops. The Astros’ concern is that they will be over the third luxury tax threshold if they sign Snell. They have a projected luxury payroll of $256.828 million, according to Cot’s Contracts, and will eclipse the second tax threshold of $277 million (45% surcharge) if they sign Snell to a contract exceeding $20 million a year. The San Francisco Giants remain in the picture for Snell, but also are waiting for Snell to lower his demands, just as they did when they signed third baseman Matt Chapman to a three-year, $52 million contract with opt-outs after each year.
That’s a choice- running down 6/150. That’s what I always figured his worth was and didn’t figure he’d get more than that with his injuries and spotty performances in other years. If he wants more than 150 he probably needs to take a short term deal and do it again while healthy. Thats a pretty big risk.
Turning down 6/150 reminds me of that scene in Boomerang where Marcus asks the lady if he can buy her dog’s leash from her so he can pretend to be looking for a lost dog in a park to attract a girl. The lady looks confused at Marcus and the cash he’s offering her, and then her husband shouts, “take it, fool!”
