it wasn't peanuts. we thought buck would be a first rate catcher, and i remember a few people here bemoaning the fact we'd be parting with him. we dealt dotel from a position of strength because we had the luxury of lidge. it ultimately turned out to look like peanuts though given beltran's role in 2004.
I liked the deal, but I always thought dealing Buck would come back to haunt us for a long time. I still hold out hope for him, but it's looking like he may not become what we thought he might..
Most scouts had already cooled on Buck and backed off the Fisk comparisons. The guy languished in triple A in favor of Brad and Chavez, do you really think anyone thought he'd be a star anymore who gets paid to evaluate talent? The Royal decided to take a chance because they could.
Why the hell do we want a rental in Soriano? I dont think we have a great shot at making the playoffs this year, and to make such a big push for this guy is ridiculous. Go after Tejada or sit on your hands.
This would be an impact player, from an offense perspective only...AS's D is mediocre at best...Besides, if WT was involved, is AS a great CF...Don't think so...However, I believe with a great bat, we can make a run for the WC...
let me amend that to "go after tejada as long as hirsh isn't included in the deal, or trade all the players on the team that you can find takers for, save for berkman, oswalt, a couple relievers, ensberg (his value is way too low right now, and at this point i'd rather keep him and pray that he gets healthy and turns it around next season), and maybe burke". we need to start planning for a future that doesn't include biggio, ausmus, and everett if we give a **** about winning.
After reading Stark's latest, I think Twins will get Soriano...they have way more prospects to offer (their top AAA pitcher Matt Garza will prolly be one of pieces to deal). I think Twins may become the team to beat after adding Soriano....would any team want to face Santana/Liriano twice in a 7 game series?
I'd like to just note here, as an aside, that from what I've seen of Barthmaier he's just not that good, and if other teams rate him as highly as BA does, how 'bout we start including his name in these talks?
I can't speak for you, but following spots is about entertainment to me, and I had a hell of a lot of fun watching the Astros that year. Sure, and since no quality bats were available, that was a good move for us. Trading for a bat isn't always a good move because it depends on the quality of the bat and the cost to you, but if you can get Soriano or Tejada for a reasonable price, you do it.
Who ever said either of those guys are required to get Soriano? That's the whole point of a negotiation. I didn't say "trade for a bat at all costs". Rental players tend to be a whole lot cheaper in terms of prospects than long-term signed players. Then again, Soriano is a whole lot better than Tejada, so it remains to be seen how it all shakes out.
Tejada could turn out to be a rental too. All he has to do is demand a trade if he doesn't get a new contract once he gets here.
I agree we should not sacrifice the future on Soriano unless we get assurance he will re-sign. I'd rather let Ensberg get back and take our chances. We'll have plenty of money in the offseason, and we'll have more options than just Soriano.
