jesus ****ing christ. that's who i wanted (as 1 piece) for roy a couple months back. that is disturbing. also, apparently the yankees offered montero for soria the other day, but soria wouldnt waive his no-trade clause?
Not to mention, Wallace isn't currently expected to be anything special as a 1B. As a 3B, which I believe is what he was drafted as, he had a good likelihood of being an above average hitter for his position. Unfortunately, he appears to be terrible defensively and got moved to a 1B/DH type. Some people said he was raking in the minors but that is far from true. He projects to be an average-hitting 1B (below average BB rate, average SLG) with still subpar defense. At least he's only 24, so there is still a little room for growth. Man, I was trying to be optimistic but I'm too easily swayed to the dark side.
I couldn't believe it when I first read it. Ramos is considered the best defensive catcher in the minors and plus he can hit. He was ranked the #42 top prospect list in baseball by Keith Law. I am just surprised the Twins used this trade chip on a okay reliever like Capps.
That's a really good point. Never thought about that. They lost Smoak to get Lee, even though Smoak wasn't tearing it up despite some promising signs, namely his BB rate. Davis still hasn't figured it out and might not anytime soon, or ever. If McLane can afford to pay another several million, we can resolve their financial concerns. They have tons of talent to offer and clearly have their eyes on the prize this season. It seems to make sense to consider Berkman who would definitely be an upgrade over Davis. As good as Vlad and Hamiltion are, they don't walk a lot. Put Puma anywhere in their order, and they have a high OBP guy who should represent more runs to knock in.
Who are they putting at 2nd then? I know Cantu played some 2B early in his career. I thought they'd use him there with Kinsler out.
What sucks about this trade even more is that Ruben Amaro Jr was in the running for the Astros GM position but we gave it to Ed Wade because he's Tal Smith's boy. Amaro Jr. gets the Phillies job and goes all Hathaway on Ed Wade for our best player. It just doesn't get much worse than that. Thanks, Drayton.
Well, Hafner was a beast before the shoulder problem. At one point, it was between he and Oritz for who was the best DH in baseball. He averaged an OPS of over 1.000 for 3 seasons. Basically, I'd love it if he became a Hafner minus the injuries. I don't think he'll walk enough or hit for that much power at this level but who knows? Wallace does have the frame to be a big time slugger but it's not clear that he'll realize that potential based on his numbers.
I am sure Cantu could play 2nd but he is a terrible defensive player. Ron Washington said they will use Joaquin Arias and Andres Blanco will play 2nd. Kinsler is only expected to miss the 15 days.
I see, thanks. I didn't know their plans or the nature of Kinsler's injury. If we move anybody else, as CometsWin alluded to, I do hope that Wade gets back younger, higher upside players. I'm not too keen on mid to late 20s guys with limited upside and a smaller window of peak performance.
i'm leaning in this direction. no matter what astros brass thinks of villar or matthews, to NOT be able to grab one of phil's top prospects after handing them roy and $11M is baffling. why not keep that young pitching prospect in addition to gose (matthews) and villar? if the dbacks could score a major leaguer AND three prospects for haren and NO MONEY i don't get how the astros couldn't do more with what they gave.
I agree. I much rather take a guy with a huge upside then the "safe" player. That why I think they should have a fire sale and just trade players like Brett Myers, Matt Lindstrom, and Jeff Keppinger. Those 3 players will never have greater trade value.
No doubt. Wade should be on amphetamines so he could be on the phone 24 hours a day until he moves every last veteran on this team that can bring prospects back in return. Berkman, Lee, Myers, Wandy, Hunter, Bourn, Lindstrom, Lyon, everybody except Castro should be on the table right now.
Except that Oswalt is to correct the mistake of trading Cliff Lee away. I swear...nothing's ever good enough.... they got decent prospects out of the deal...and while they did give the Phillies 11 million...don't they still save money vs. had they kept Oswalt through the length of his contract? Maybe the prospects aren't projected to be super stars, maybe they're busts...the fact is we won't know until they step on the field. I'm just happy they got something done...I'd be far more upset if the deadline passed and they made no move at all.
