I'm a patient as they come, but if it's Worly, Gose, and Happ for ROY freaking OSWALT, Keppinger, and 12 MILLION FREAKING DOLLARS, I'm going to jump right on the ole' "Ed Wade is a Big Fat f***ing Idiot" train.
No, but I also didn't believe the Astros - an organization desperately in need of left-handed power throughout the minors, at every position - would take Delino Deshields Jr. (considered fringe first rounder) at No. 8 over Josh Sale. There are some positives on Ed Wade's resume, no doubt. But there are also some glaring holes. And when multiple media reports are out and fit exactly with his supposed weakness... it does make me worry. Hopefully it's for nothing.
haven't signed him yet. wade could be pulling off a slick move on that front. don't sign him, and we get the #9 pick next year, in what is supposed to be a waaay better draft than this one. would be pretty damn crafty if that's his intentions. can't wait to see everybody throw a fit if deshields doesnt get signed, not understanding what that means. we should all be hoping that he doesn't sign (in this case).
Then maybe you missed it when they went out and got a 16-yr-old kid from the DR with one of the biggest international FA signings. Ovando profiles better than Sale. Seriously, have any of y'all been paying attention to his moves since he became GM. None of them were big losses for the Astros, and most of them proved to be solid wins.
Same here. I've defended Wade so far. I'd expect that kind of deal only if Philly was picking up the tab for the whole contract.
Interesting but I don't get the sense that this is the case. I think they fully intend to sign DeShields.
NOt really. the problem with that idea (and why you don't see teams use it) is because they lose all their leverage the subsequent year. So while a team will get a #9 pick the following year, like the nationals did in '09, because of having no leverage they usually have to draft strictly for signability. So that even those you have the #9 draft you'll probably have to draft a talent ranked 40th-60th for instance. See the nationals drafting Storen in 09 and the rangers drafting Skoal this year.
Very few 1st round picks have signed. Choice signed yesterday, which should help get the ball rolling.
Agreed. No need to be picky though......I would take a right handed power bat as well. We just need power prospects.......PERIOD. Delino did not fit that bill. Ed Wade has done a good job for the most part. I will reserve my judgement until after the move has been made and all of the speculation has passed.
i've pointed this out multiple times. he's never really lost a trade. biggest loss in a trade ultimately ended up being losing luke scott in the tejada deal. the valverde trade is probably one of the larger fleecings of the decade. he's made 2 bad signings (feliz and matsui), but they are both negligible at this point (although everybody will harp on matsui till the end of time for some reason). and all that under the meddling, stubborn, overbearing eyes of the tall grocer. as far as Houston GM's go, he's underrated and morey is overrated.
Because deals like that do happen. I have no idea what to expect. So far we know Oswalt, Happ, and a large sum of money are involved. My guess is Singleton is coming.
