Holy s***....I get home from work and this is what I see. Purp i can understand but I was hoping Garner would be given another chance or at least had his performance fully reviewed in the offseason. I mean the timing doesn't quite make much sense, though I guess it gives the team the jump on finding suitable replacements. Well hopefully this will signal a rebirth of sorts.

Didn't Jimy Williams get fired the day after he got booed at the all star game?

Let this be a lesson for the new GM and manager. If you're not doing well, don't get introduced on the field. You will get booed and then fired the next day.

Unfortunately one of the prerequisites for both the GM and the manager is that they have to pretty much be YES men.

I DO like the idea of Brad becoming the manager though.

We knew when HUN left that we were in trouble.Keeping the goodship lollypop afloat with Drayton as owner is going to be a tough proposition because it's going to take some extraordinary individuals to navigate with the sticky fingers of Uncle at the helm.

    PR happy moves
lack of spending dough when it's absolutely needed.
Overruling Garner and calling for guys like Brad Liidge making big bucks to run out game after game costing us the division.
    Fall guys all around too.......etc.,etc.
    PLEASE SELL THE TEAM!

The more that I think about it, the more I like the Garner firing as well. Phil was a great guy (it seemed) and did help right the ship at a time when it was sinking and brought us so close to a WS title, but his constant lineup changes and stubbornness regarding personnel drove me nuts (not to mention his terrible double switches in the 04 Cards NLDS series)

Though I don't think he had much to work with this season, especially with regards to starting pitchers, I still like the change.

They want to give coop a working interview and a replacement for casserly's fat twin brother so that he will start the process of analyzing and signing free agents at the end of the season.

I am sure that Berkman's offense will now return. And jennings will stop faking that injury. And ...

The truth is that the Astros may need to rebuild and not reload this time.

To replace Phil Garner and Tim Purpura, the Astros have named bench coach Cecil Cooper interim manager and team president Tal Smith interim general manager.

There's already some thought that Tal's son Randy, a flop as a GM in both San Diego and Detroit, could be Purpura's permanent replacement. The Astros could also talk to Gerry Hunsicker about coming back. If it's between, Hunsicker and Smith, Hunsicker is the easy choice. Cooper is deserving of a long look as Houston's manager. He's paid his dues as both a Triple-A manager for the Brewers and as four years as a bench coach. Aug. 27 - 4:00

Either Ausmus, Bagwell, or Biggio will be the next manager. Book it. Probably Biggio as manager, Ausmus as bench coach, Bagwell as 1st base coach.

I wish Tal would handle the GM duties permanently.

please tell me your joking. why do people want bagwell/biggio to be coaches/managers. if they do bad then it would be hard to fire them becuase they are the biggest parts of the astros and management would be afraid to alienate the fanbase if they were fired. only one i consider possible manager is ausmus.

I'm not saying I want any of them to manage the team. It's just my prediction as to what Uncle Drayton will choose. Bad decision in the long-term, massive goodwill in the short-term = classic Drayton.

I'll put $10 in the tip jar if the next manager isn't either Biggio, Bagwell, or Ausmus. You can put in $10 if I'm wrong. We're all winners that way.

Absolutely will not happen. Bagwell my guess is having too much fun enjoying retirement...I doubt he'd put up with the rigors of a 162 game season so soon...and Bidge, hell he hasn't even retired yet.

Ausmus would be a good candidate down the road but my guess is he too takes a year or two off before starting a coaching stint..and when that happens he'll probably start as a bench coast first.
