i like alyson just fine, and in a town devoid of even a remotely decent baseball writer (save maybe brian taggert), she's certainly cream among a bunch of slop, but... isn't she employed by the astros? i mean, good for her, and all, but it'd be confounding if she didn't "scoop" everyone on this.....
Damn 20 years! During that time I've graduated high school, graduated college, watched the Rockets win two championships, watched the Oilers leave town , got married, have two kids now, moved to STL, moved to Southern Arizona and am now on my fourth job. And all that time Biggio has just played his heart out for the Astros. Nice job Craig, thanks for the memories!
I was just about to ask if this made anyone else feel old. Anyone else remeber how you could wait at either the home side or visitors tunnel at the Astrodome and get autographs from the players when they showed up via taxi or were leaving the Astrodome on a team bus? You just don't see that anymore. It's sad to say but this will help Drayton sell tickets for the rest of year. Too bad Biggio can't go out on top and never got that ring.
Do you not understand that the concept of the MLB.com mailbags is to ask the beat writers their opinion (many times, an informed one) on an issue? Of course it's speculation. That's the point. If you have a problem with that, you have a problem with the concept of the mailbag (created by MLB.com executives, not Footer). As for her writing in general, obviously I read it given my job and I think it's excellent. She's also won numerous awards for her work, and has been extended numerous times while other MLB.com writers haven't been so fortunate. Her credentials to her writing and her work are pretty damn good.
MLB is the employer, not the Astros. That's a big distinction. That's why at the bottom of every article, it says it's not subject to approval by any of the clubs. Players don't have any distinct connections to MLB.com. In fact, a lot of players on other teams are closer to the local media outlets. MLB.com got this scoop based on her reputation in the clubhouse, not anything related to being a part of the Astros organization (because she's not).
What does he do on the night he announces his retirement? He just hits your basic everyday grand slam.
