Yet you want to keep Hidalgo? You make very little sense.

Hidalgo's contract is up at the end of this year, and he's their best outfielder.

ok..so what's the point...this is a thread about a personal services contract...and because of that personal services contract, they better win this year?? why?

come on, pgabriel...if this were an astros board, we'd be calling you a troll.

They better win this year because they will be going through some serious dismantling the next. You're right, one has nothing to do with the other. Drayton's just milking this for all its worth. But you're right, nothing wrong with making a buck.

    Misguided excitement.

I was excited to open this thread thinking we were signing an "actual" pitcher that could give us some quality innings but oh well.....

I like Nolan but I have this question in the back of my head saying...What did he do to help the Ranger's pitching staff?

Art, probably not much if anything. Personally, I admit that I'm very happy about this just because it feels right.

gotta say i agree. you complain about everything the stros do. they've had one of the most successful offseasons ever, and still you b**** and moan.

    give it a rest.

Nothing that wasn't in his contract IIRC. I think the Rangers actually talked about adding working with the pitching staff to their offers for his new contract. BAsically all he was, was a face for marketing. When they needed to do an ad campaign they called him and said we want you to do this. He made public appearances promoting the team and various other appearances for the team. IT is very similar to the options that are supposedly added into the Roger Clemens contract. He has the option of working for 10 years for the organization after he finishes his on field contract.

yeah. this contract probably has nothing to do with actually helping the actual team play. he isn't becoming a pitching coach, just a marketing guy.

    works for me.

Well, he wasn't the pitching coach, so he did nothing to help the Ranger's pitching staff. I don't think that's what a personal services contract is about. It might involve him going to spring training and working with guys, but mostly it's about personal appearances and that sort of thing. Somebody feel free to correct me if I'm wrong on this.

No the point is we don't know if the offseason is successful, till the season is played. Ask UT fans about this.

You don't think it's responsible spending? By spending the money on Pettitte, McLane was able to get Clemens here. Although it certainly wasn't a done deal, you can bet that the Astros were thinking in the back of their minds that Clemens was a strong possibility if they signed Pettitte. The Astros are virtually assured sellouts whenever Clemens pitches as well as national attention. I suspect they will also draw big crowds whenever Pettitte pitches. The signing of Pettitte (with or without Clemens) improved the team AND improved McLane's chances to make a buck.
