those are my thoughts...something tells me they don't plan on signing a frontline starter this winter though (who is even available?). i do hope that, if indeed they are extending myers, that if bud norris continues his inconsistent play, they at least add somebody to take his place in the offseason.
Well, if the goal is 2012, you're only talking about paying him for 1 year where you don't really need him (2011). So again, it just depends on the price you get him for. If he just values stability and signs a longer term deal in exchange for less money per year, maybe it works out. If we pay him as though he's an ace, then it's probably going to be a big negative.
Potentially give up draft picks to sign a frontline starter? Sounds like you want to go backwards right after we're finally starting to move in the right direction. I think we're at least 2 years away from looking to FA for Type A or B players.
I totally agree. You don't sign type A/B free agents unless they are the final pieces to the puzzle. This team has a lot of holes to fill in the next few years before they get to that point.
Which is why signing Myers isn't a bad move, we shouldn't go after any good free agents for a couple of years, he doesn't cost us any picks.
you don't lose a draftpick by signing a type B FA. i don't see how anybody can be in favor of signing myers (and have him play out the bulk of that extended contract here), if it isn't complemented with adding another quality starter. myers, happ, and wandy are the start of an above average rotation, but it's a half-assed way of assembling one if you still have garbage like lawesley wright and bud norris on the backend.
It would be nice to know what teams were offering or would have offered for Myers. If it was even one good prospect, I think the Astros should have sold high and worried about stabilizing the rotation through other means. Maybe the offers weren't that good in which case, the extension might make a little more sense.
thescorer Still nothing official on Brett Myers, who agreed to terms on a multiyear deal. He's taken parts of a physical..
I remember reading somewhere that the team wasn't completely enamored with what other organizations were offering for him. Maybe that's true and they weren't offered decent prospects or maybe perhaps knowing what the rotation is right now they were overvaluing him a bit, which might not be a bad thing. The mutual option for next year is 8 million, which seems like a good deal if he continues to pitch like this. If it's extended a few years beyond that in the 10 million range, he could theoretically be anchoring the rotation when the team starts to become competitive again...a nice veteran presence along with Wandy. But if he starts to become mediocre again, then obviously it's money wasted. Wonder why both sides couldn't agree on the option and work out an extension next year if appropriate...I guess because Myers is trying to work out a deal while his stock is still high.
Not to bad but certainly not good.... alysonfooter The pact also contains additional performance bonus potential that could raise the total value to $29.5 million alysonfooter The 2-yr guaranteed value, incl. buyout on option yr, guarantees $21 mill. If the contract carries through '13, it will guarantee $28
Guessing that means $9 mil the next two years and a $3 mil buyout for 2013 if not used. Seems reasonable.
thescorer Myers will make $7M in 2011, $11M in 2012, $10M or $3M buyout in 2013 and a $2M signing bonus that replaces buyout of current deal. -Z
Nice deal in 2011 and ok for 2012, 3 million dollar buyout seems okay also so overall not horrible at all and also very tradeable down the road.
could it be any more ironic that randy wolf, the last guy they offered a bloated 3-year contract to based on playing a half a good season for them, is on the mound against us today?
I'm not sure. How tradeable is one year of Myers at $11 million plus a $3 million buyout? I mean, if he wasn't tradeable now when he's younger and has a cheaper contract, he won't be more tradeable when he's older and more expensive.
He was tradeable, Stros SHOULD have dealt him but that is neither here or there. Tradeable in 2012 if he is doing well, its obvious Uncle D is willing to throw money into deals if his people say its for the better of the club.
Well, only going by what I read and even Wade said himself yesterday, they had tons of interest in him and were prepared to move him had they not began talking extension. This tell me they CHOSE to not move him because they wanted him to be the ace during the rebuilding period which is fine. I THINK they should have moved him for the prospects but its not a horrible decision or anything.
