I would understand if they traded him, but, assuming he pitches at or close to what he's done this year, I'd be happy to retain him. This team, although rebuilding, still needs quality players and Myers is only 29.
If they couldn't get what they wanted for him then keeping him as a solid veteran presence for the RIGHT amount of money is cool. I am a little worried about the money issue but we will see.
This was my first thought. I hate to say it, but I see us overpaying him, and doing it at a pretty bad time, a time when our team is on the downside. I think they should have taken what they could get for him instead of overspending. Of course, it hasn't happened yet, but something tells me most of us (including me) are not going to like the signing. I'll be happy to have him, but not at the price we're probably going to pay. BNightengale #mlb#twins The Minn Twins say they'll explore the starters' market again in August after unable to pull off deal for Astros' Brett Myers I would LOVE to know what they offered...
Is this the same Myers that went off on that reporter last year or a couple of years ago and the author of one of Jim Rome's frequent soundbytes?

Myers: "cuz your a r****d, you don't know **** about ****ing baseball, your filling in for someone" Reporter: "how do you spell r****d" "BOOM!!!.....outta here"
http://houston.astros.mlb.com/news/..._id=12856526&vkey=news_hou&fext=.jsp&c_id=hou So it looks like they had a chance to move him and probably would have if not for the extension talks, don't like that. If the Stros had such a demand for Myers then move him for the prospects which I Imagen where significant. If this is a crazy money deal then its a true fail however if it is a reasonable deal then I guess its acceptable to a point.
Huge failure. This team is years from competing and Myers will not be a part of the team that does finally compete.
Ok feeling A LOT better about 2 years as that should be okay, should be no more then 2 for 11-12 million. ed_price Brett Myers' extension with #Astros is expected to be for 2011-12 with option for 2013
Awesome! Myers is the key to keeping us out of the basement. We need to make sure we stay ahead of the Pirates in terms of talent. Myers' extra 3-4 wins vs getting a mediocre pitcher for a fraction of the price allows us to do that, and therefore he is well worth it. I'm really looking forward to the awesome battles for 3rd place in the NL Central for years to come. With Myers locked up, I feel we have a fighting chance against any of the Pirates, Cubs, or the Brewers. We also have a chance to battle for the .500 mark each year. Nothing like being in September and seeing just how many games you have to make up to reach the .500 market. Without Myers, we may be 5-10 games out. With him, you just never know! The uphill battle for mediocrity would not have been possible if we didn't extend Myer. He is definitely a necessary sign for Wade.
The team could be reasonably competitive in 2012 and certainly 2013, and Myers could be a #2 or #3 pitcher for that team. The key to whether it's good or bad is just how much money we'd be paying and what exactly teams were offering for him in trade.
Don't worry guys. In three years he'll be 32, and we'll get B type prospects and pay half his salary for another team.
I might have tried to trade Myers, but signing him to a manageable 3 year deal, won't destroy rebuilding. His career stats suggest he is slightly above average and he's is just about to turn 30. Astros fans have become quite possibly become the whiniest, most reactionary fans in the sport. In your eyes nothing the Astros do is right, if you trade someone, you didn't get enough. If you don't trade someone you're an idiot. Everybody is frustrated about the way the last 4 years or so has gone, it is most certainly Drayton's fault were in this situation, but you can't undo what's already been done. Berkman should have been traded two years ago, but he wasn't and this is the most they could get for him now. They have been drafting well, and keeping their prospects for 3 years now, and they are only a couple of months into true rebuilding. How about at least giving the Astros a chance, as much as everyone hates Ed Wade, he is the man who built the Phillies who have done all the damage recently.
I don't see what that has to do with re-upping Myer now. If you haven't noticed, there's still this thing called "Free Agency" a few years from now that allows us to pick up someone of Myer's caliber... without having to pay that guy before we're ready to contend. If the Astros pay Myers based on what he's done in his career, rather than the past few months, then it would be a fair deal. But I don't think I've ever seen a contract that's based one a player's career value as opposed to his current value. If a player has a career year, he tends to get paid based on his career year's worth rather than his mediocrity before that. Plus, this is Ed Wade. I'd imagine Myers is at least twice the player Matsui was. And I'm shuddering at the prospect at paying him twice what Matsui got. Here's hoping he surprises the hell out of all of us and not actually overpay for a change.
still debatable. Happ and Myers are nice guys in the rotation. Wandy gets back to form and the Astros spend some money on a frontline starter this winter. They can compete in a pretty awful division.
