Can anyone imagine how well the Astros would have done the past three years without Carlos's 100 RBIs per year? We overpaid but he is delivering.
Depends what you replaced him with. What if, instead of $17MM on Lee, you spent it on 3 solid $6MM players? Given the number of holes on the team, the team may have been better - but it really all just depends on what you use the resources on. This isn't a question of "Lee or no Lee". It would be a question of "Lee or (whatever you replace Lee with)". That said, while I wasn't a fan of his contract, I think he's done better than I expected. I think he's less overpaid than, say, Matsui or Brandon Lyon. You get well above average performance out of Lee, whereas you could replace the others with scrubs and get the same results.
How about spending on the farm. Which is what everyone is NOW saying is a good idea. What year was the draft when we barely signed anyone?
2007, which ironically was the year after signing Lee. That said, the issue with the Astros and draft spending isn't a lack of money or being cheap - some of the signing bonuses it would take to get these guys in is pocket change in the grand scheme of things. It all came/comes down to McLane not wanting to offend his buddy Bud Selig, who doesn't like it when teams go over slot value. It seems McLane is moving in the right direction on that, but we'll see...
Bad for baseball though. The Nats paid all that money to Strasburg, and now they are going to have to pay Harper even more. I don't think it will change without a work stoppage, and I don't really want that.
2 teams with fewer then 3 wins in the NL. The other is the Mets. The Orioles actually have the most losses in MLB right now.
It's kind of weird that the O's don't get their first real day off until next Thursday. We'll have had 3 days off in that time.
no i bet it will change next in the next collective bargaining agreement to some hard slotting like the nba does. You're not going to see the union strike over the rights of players that don't even belong to the union. Like in the nba, it's just not a big bargaining chip because the existing union isn't going to fight for more of their potential money going to non-union players. Anyways...all the draftees are getting well below market value in the current system. If Strasburg were a FA he would get $50-100 million and be worth it. I'd place a pretty hefty bet that Strasburg will be worth over his $15 million bonus + Salary over his club controlled years.
soooo...WTF. Rockes are on FSNH......so I put it on ESPN2 which says the game is on. And it's ESPN News.....
Hmm....I live 3hrs away, in Nacogdoches TX. Love that we get FSNhouston....HATE how we are blacked out from these games. We still get ESPN and FSN ROckets games when they are on both. But Astros, apparently not. Blah.
Totally stinks that we can not watch the ESPN feed. ESPN HD is so much better quality than the local channel. Bourne is just spectacular.
Have been watching on and off but looks like Myers is throwing a nice game however, of course, a Dave Duncan project is better.
