The worse they are, the stronger it drives in the message of how important a farm system is. There are fewer options available to chase big ticket free agents when fans aren't showing up. I know I'm Mr. Silver Lining, but I think this is ultimately going to lead to something good....that might not come about as quickly without sucking this bad. It's hard to be disappointed when you have no expectation for something good. I had zero expectation this team would be any good. And as spring training concluded...with Roy getting another injection and Lance hitting the DL...any illusion you could muster about this team being any good were quickly put aside. So we're awful. Let's be great at being awful. Let's maximize whatever great resources come out of that (high draft picks; quicker decisions by management/ownership to focus even more intensely on developing young talent). Despite being spoiled from 1994-2006 with a playoff-capable team, I've endured tons of summers as an Astro fan where my team seemingly had no shot. I can endure an awful one, particularly if it's a stepping stone to something much better.
If nothing else, all of this losing seems to have brought some additional peace to our little ClutchFans' Astros community. I remember there being a few more arguments around here when we were a middling team. Then again, this forum has always been worlds more civilized than the borderline insanity that is the GARM at times. Either way, I think that watching this extreme level of baseball fail has sucked the life out of us to the point that it's not even worth arguing about matters that are only relevant to fans of teams with playoff hopes. You just laugh. Or cry. Or both.
I think most of the discussion in this forum has moved to the Texans threads. LOL. I know I'm dieing for the NFL season to arrive. Screw summer time! Bring me some fall football damnit!
Could not agree more. I can withstand an awful season to get a jump start on getting back to some good seasons. I honestly think it will take a couple or more seasons to get back but I also think we have more resources than teams like the Pirates/Royals etc. so we won't be down for long like they usually are.
finally saw a stros' game, as it was on ESPN2...wow, very pathetic...matsui always sucked, but c'mon, do something...he's not all the blame, but man, this team is sorry...f'n Cards...
I was feeling positive at the very beginning of the season, but this has really sucked the life out of me in regards to baseball. They just show no life, no passion, nothing when at bat. Bases loaded, down 1 in the 8th and Matsui swings at the 2nd pitch...after the Cards walked 2 of the 3 on base? I just want to scream at the tv, "Hey Pence, they're going to throw it in the dirt if you have 2 strikes! Eat your f***ing bat and actually take a f***ing walk!" Brett Myers throws a great game. Oswalt has been good. Wandy was up and down in his 2 starts, but at least kept both games relatively close. Pitching has been the least of this team's problem, as most thought it would be. It's not great, but nearly every game has been winnable if the offense would just get their collective heads our of their asses.
Matsui is still trash, I was disappointed to say the least when Towles got the job over Castro, and Pence still swinging at things up, down, and/or away in/from the sz. Doesn't help that Berkman is out or Lee is doing jack ****. Nitpicking here but how is that 3 yr 15 mil contract for Lyon workin' out!?
Lets hope that Drayton and Tal get the message and allow Wade, Heck and the scouts to go after talent over signability and allow them to go over slot to sign the more talented players.
@BenBadler: Starting 0-8 is the best thing that could happen to the Astros. No more delusions of contending. Rebuild, trade for prospects
I think going over slot is overrated. I know Colorado doesn't do that...and I don't believe Tampa does either. Both are heavy hitters in the draft. There's plenty of talent out there.
The positive side is that with all the other players sucking hard he will likely e our All Star. Not like he doesn't deserve to be there (so far this year)
