He may yet become a decent player. Strikeouts a little much, but his power is starting to show at MLB level. I'm not down or up on him...he's got very little time in majors to prove himself.
He should be playing every day to have that shot, but I don't see him coming around. With Dominguez & Singleton probably arriving in Houston at some point next year, his time is dwindling.
Why? In that they both look like busts? Ward just never hit for the kind of power he was expected to (aside from his first season). Very different players, IMO. As an aside, I did not realize Ward was suspended for 50 games earlier this year.
power hitting first baseman who kept going back/forth between Majors and AAA. Would show some flashes that he could be a good player but never meets his potential. Hoping Wallace doesn't end up like that.
Most people didn't think of Wallace as a power hitting 1B. They thought he'd hit for a good average, get on base, and hit for occasional power (by the time we got him).
I don't know if anyone puts any stock in these rankings, but mlb.com updated their prospect list and has Comer as our 7th best and the highest ranked player from the Toronto trade. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/prospects/watch/y2012/
Its apparent that I dont understand minor league prospect rankings, for the #1 prospect in all of the minors is a pitcher with a ERA over 5.00
MLB.com's rankings are heavily cited but it's among the worst lists to go off of. The guy in charge (Jonathan Mayo) is just a columnist for MLB.com; he has no scouting background nor does he solicit scouting opinions. It's largely based on past hype from the big baseball publications. Even worse, it's only updated in the off-season so big upswings and downswings during the current season aren't accounted for. The current top prospect is either Profar or Bundy. In Teheran's defense, he's got the raw stuff of an ace and dominated last year. He was reasonable top prospect at the beginning of the year.
Mayo just inserts prospects based on his pre-season list without regard to current performance. Dominguez/Comer/Clemens/Oberholtzer are not top 10 organizational prospects. Santana and DDJ's performance this year put them in the top 10. We're now deep enough that a power relief prospect like Chapman (who I like) doesn't crack our top 20 anymore. And he's had a great season.
Yes and no. Comer and Musgrove are probably two of the worse performing prospects from Toronto's score of recent 1st rounders but they're still pitching fine and no red flags come up. I'd say they're pitching to expectation, not exceeding it like Toronto's other prospects. They're both high ceiling/high risk prospects and are potential 4-5 year projects. The Astros definitely bought low on them, which was a great way to add high upside talent to the system cheaply. Between Comer, Musgrove and Wojo, Toronto paid almost $3m in bonuses combined. Toronto ate all of that.
