That was quick....just from the last two trades...our top 20 is quite different. Dominquez at 4 Musgrove at 7 Wojciechowski at 11 Rasmussen at 13 Perez at 15 Of course this is without the draftees....
I really like this deal from the Astros' perspective. Supposedly the Blue Jays are tickled pink that they got their "closer of the future" in Carpenter in this deal. I haven't seen much of anything that makes me feel like Carpenter is going to be a plus closer, but I'm not a scout, so maybe I'm missing something. If anything, I'm with xcrunner when he says that Happ is worth taking a flier on. Pitchers with his profile just don't come around every day. I was ready to see him move on, but I can also see why a team would be actively looking to deal for him. Most of all, I'm glad the Astros found a team to take on Brandon Lyon. He hadn't been terrible this season, but I hated constantly being reminded of his contract. The prospects coming back are solid, if unspectacular, Ben Francisco is a J-Mike-type fourth or fifth outfielder and though Cordero could help in the bullpen now, I've read in a couple of places that the Astros will likely move him again before the deadline. I like the trade because the Astros are trading current assets for future assets, which is the right idea, even if none of the players moved end up being stars.
PTBNL has been revealed! Joe Musgrove is a legit source, right guys?

See ya soon brotha! <s>@</s>kevcomer it's tough at first man but you'll love it here. With Bluefield (Greeneville's Appy League mates), he is 3-3 with a 3.95 ERA in 10 games (7 starts). In 43.1 innings, he's allowed 25 runs (19 earned) on 43 hits (4 homers), walked 8, and struck out 29. He got the start against Greeneville on July 31, and allowed an unearned run on 7 hits and struck out 5 in 4 2/3 innings of work.
That's the cherry on top of an incredible trade. 4 of Toronto's top 20 when they were the number 1 ranked system? This is Pence trade level potential.
57th overall pick from 2011 draft. Arsenal per Kevin himself: [rquoter]Kevin Comer: Right now what I’m working with is a four-seam, which I’ve been told has topped out at 94 MPH. Then I have a two-seam around 90-91 MPH that I’ve changed up over the summer and have moving more like a sinker now, and that’s been helping me out. I actually just developed a changeup over the winter, which is nice to have, and it’s really working well for me. It’s got a lot of drop on it and comes in around 82-83 MPH. Then I have a spike curveball as my last pitch, and that is normally my out pitch. I can throw it big and looping or hard, but most of the time I’m throwing it as hard as I can [laughs]. I’ll throw that anywhere from 76-80 MPH.[/rquoter] http://yankees.scout.com/2/1064116.html
That's what, 5 high upside high schoolers in the system now? Very exciting. Just need some leftys. Adrian Houser Vincent Velasquez Lance McCullers Joe Musgrove Kevin Comer
Haha, even Wade found an acorn or two (Pence trade). Let's wait until the honeymoon period wears off and we get a wiff of how bad his sh`t stinks. Gotta be pretty excited though!
If he had also raped the White Sox & Pirates so handily. Can't believe how much Toronto gave up for Lyon, Carpenter, and a terrible J.A. Happ, while CWS gave up very little for Myers.

Eh, I thought Luhnow got excellent return for Wandy, who's now 0-3 with a 5.47 ERA in four Pittsburgh starts. Not sure why folks are down on Grossman - he's a very legit prospect. Has a .457 OBP and .943 OPS since joining Corpus. I'm more excited about him than anyone in the Toronto deal (though I do like that one too, of course).
Obvious assignment is obvious

Astros acquire hard-throwing RHP Kevin Comer as player to be named later in 7/20 trade with Toronto. MLB.com has him as #11 in Toronto. We have a nice collection of reasonably high ceiling arms. Hope the player development team does its job.
I think two assumptions resulted in disappointment with the Wandy trade. #1 - Wandy was our single best trade chip -- He wasn't. Despite Wandy's record, Happ was more attractive because he's younger, cheaper and has comparable upside with room to grow. #2 - We didn't need a polished OBP guy -- The more I reflect on Grossman, the more I like him. Admittedly a lot of his value is dependent on whether he can stick in CF, but he's a legit polished up-the-middle/top-of-the-line-up hitter. That's valuable and was definitely a weakness in our system at the time.
Happ has been kicked out of the starting rotation in Toronto it seems. Glad we were able to jettison him when we did.
What they are doing now is sort of irrelevant to me. To me the Astros got fair value. We got a lot better than that in our Toronto deal, despite giving up very little. I didn't expect a lot from Wandy. I did want more, but who didn't.
Can't please everybody. Some people still think giving up Gose was a mistake, though it will be shown to be a wise decision as the years pass.
