You have to ask yourself; is the shorterm hit worth the long term rewards. The next 2 years will be tough financially but after that period, the major contracts of Oswalt/Berkman/Beltran would simply replace the Pettitte/Bagwell/(insert a number of guys) contracts.
An official BBS "Watch" now for Beltran? Cool. As the man who originally broke the Beltran-to-Astros story earlier this year (as well as the Clemens deal a month beforehand), I'll do my best to dig up any insider info I can. You want Beltran news? Stroke my ego! Proclaim me your king and savior!! Now... DANCE FOR ME!! Bwa ha ha ha!!!
Beltran is an amazing talent, but he is not consistent. Sure he played great in the post season, but very average during the regular season. I don't think he is worth the money he is going to be commanding. Whenever it is a horserace with money involved the Stros lose out. See Daryl Kile, Mike Hampton etc..etc..etc. DD
For anyone interested the petition is up to like 22k and the keepbeltran.com fund is nearing 15k. There's also another site savebeltran.com pretty much doing the same thing. Why they decided to duplicate instead of pooling resources is beyond me. Oh by the way the keepbeltran boards is overrun with yankee fans about 3 to 1 one of them was even quoted in that Post-Dispatch article.
This isnt football where you can cut them and not pay them, the contract Bagwell has is guaranteed and no one in there right mind would trade for him.
Look up pessimistic in the dictionary. I am not sure you said it, I am saying this about all those who voted "no". It's being pessimistic and saying he won't sign. The same people said we wouldn't make it to the playoffs. The same people said we would lose to Atlanta. Are you saying this, too? And DaDakota You didn't watch the regular season games, did you? He played like this in the regular season and nonetheless, you turn it up a notch in the PLAYOFFS. I agree, I hope he stays, but don't say he wasn't a good player already before the playoffs.
Unless our bid is New York Yankee bid +1, we aren't going to be able to keep him. He won't give us a "hometown" discount of any sort. The Puerto Rican community has no bearing for no other reason than there are more puerto ricans in the 5 boroughs of NY than in all of Puerto Rico and Houston combined. I think it will come down to 2 factors...money and family( i.e. where his wife wants to be)...but if the money isn't there, he's gone. Interesting thing here though...One thing that may work in our favor is that there seems to be a sentiment around the majors that there are 2 types of Yankees. Curt Schilling was discussing this on WFAN and was also brought up by another GM that Mike and the Dog had on the show. There are the "true" Yankees...the guys who started withe Yanks, who respect the game, respect their opponents, respect their teammates and are blessed with skill. Those guys are the Jeters, Posadas, Bernies, Marianos and Matsuis. Then you have the fugazy Yankees ...the Sheff's, Arods, Browns, and the like (play for pay guys). I happen to think Beltran is a lot more like a true yankee than a fugazy...but maybe its a situation that he doesn;t want to have to deal with...or maybe its wishful thinking on my part.
Sure they can, if the Astros offer 16 million a year they've got a legitimate shot at keeping him. The national media has written off a return to Houston as it was obvious everytime Beltran hit a home run these past few weeks. The same media wrote off the astros in August, then again in late September. I still like our chances of retaining Carlos.
If the Astros offer 16 mil....and the Yankees offer 18-20...what incentinve is there for him to stay?
Who's to say he'll bolt over an extra 2 million a year? With taxes factored its not much of a difference. If he leaves it won't be because of the money.
how 'bout avoiding state income taxes 81 games out of the year?? and you're assuming it's only about the money. this is a choice of where this guy will live for the next 5-10 years of his life. he may not want to make NY his home. i know tons of people who've turned down jobs in NY and elsewhere because they'd rather live somewhere else.
the tax thing is a non issue...he can own a home in Texas or Florida and get around that...as for where he wants to live, i agree with your statement ...but lets not forget who his agent is. Boras will be after the biggest paycheck possible.
Actually I think income tax is calculated on where he lives AND where he works. All home games would be state income tax free if he lived and worked in TX.
I thought the YANKEES were going after a #1 STARTER first? Like Randy Johnson or Pedro ... and who would BELTRAN replace? Matsui/Shef/William is out there . Can't image how they can sign a Randy Johnson & Beltran and replace Bernie William who has been one of their best playoff players.
as long as you occupy the place in texas or florida for 6 months out of the year, you can declare that your home state...thats why Shaq kept his home in orlando.
