Puzzling. Like he made up his mind to go with Giles in the 8th, regardless of what happened with the bats.... (cue the Hinch sunglasses picture). Giles notoriously not as sharp when he knows he has a cushion to work with.
With Giles's increased multi-inning outings recently (something he'd never really done much with us), he's getting him used to it before the playoffs, when he may really need it. (eta: also Phillips/Trout/Upton due up) That's my story at least. 2nd eta: Or he's getting Giles ready for the late-inning fireman role Not that bad, his #1 job is to make them cut it if there's a chance of a play at the plate. Probably didn't need to there, but he couldn't see the throw and Pettis never gave him the hard stop. MOAR insurance.
