He has been...just during the 2016 season, he's not been. Since opening day, I wonder where Crane ranks on spending among owners. It has got to be at least top 10 if not even better.
Astros signed #4 (Cionel Perez) and 14 (Freudis Nova) from mlbs top 30. They are in the mix for #6 (Lourdes Gurriel) and #13 (Yanio Perez). They also signed Yorbin Cueta, Angel Macuare, and Anibal Sierra all for over $1M each. Nerio Rodriguez and Jairo Solis each go 6 figure bonuses. Really great haul if they are able to get Gurriel.
He is still at the projectable stage of his development. He is probably a late first or early second rounder if he were in the US amateur draft. Astros trying hard to address starting pitching in an economical and smart manner. He needs to work on his control/command but he has good stuff. He will cost the Astros nearly $11,000,000. I am surprised that the Astros didn't go hard after Norge Ruiz instead, the Astros must really like something they see in Perez. Astros are going all in when it comes to young Cuban players.
I would much rather address pitching this way rather than overpaying someone like Rich Hill or Scott Kazmir.
I completely forgot that Jim Crane's spending only counts if the money he's spending goes toward the MLB component of the Houston Astros.
Yeah, but have they seen our projections on fangraphs!?! Yeah, We need to think about our 2020 rotation.
Now, if the Astros can sign Lourdes Gurriel whom many consider the best international prospect Overall, this can get salty. May push Astros farm system to number #1. Great way to take advantaged of the international signing period. No one knows how the international free agency will work after 2016 and with the penalty rule in play. Where if you spend more than what you can, you're not able to sign international players the following year. Plus this is a strong crop this year. Now that Cuba doesn't put any strain with their top players.
You joke, but it's these kinds of moves that allow you to extend your championship window. $5M is a small price to pay if Perez pans out, and can be a plus-pitcher in the rotation in a couple of years. Would you rather they NOT sign these types of players? I'm not sure what you're criticizing.
I guess we are just complaining to complain. I don't think the Astros or anyone projected our top 3 pitchers to be busts this year. That kind of sealed our fate this year.
I don't think anyone is complaining about the signing It's the comments about how this type of spending INSTEAD of spending on current major league talent is smart It will likely keep our window open longer But unless a couple of these arms turn in to true top of the rotation types, it might never bring us all the way to the top These are great signings, also need to pony up a little for guys who help us win now
Like who?... What free agent pitcher do you regret the Astros not dumping loads of cash on? Grienke? Price? Kazmir?...
Johnny Cueto for one. He has gone back to his consistent sub 3 era string.... He is consistently good year to year. He has around a 5 WAR right now.
