People came after Barry with the signs and all the rest because he was a prick, he was breaking a hallowed record by cheating, and he was being a prick about the fact that he was cheating. Palmeiro got creamed because he was such a douche about it in front of Congress. People will go after Clemens in the wake of the report, because so many people hated him already. Honestly, who cares about Tejada enough to heckle him? It *appears* that he's off the stuff, based on his numbers dropping way down. As maybe the 4th best hitter in our lineup, he's not going to be the major focus of opposing fans. Evan
So can we expect Miggy to regain some of his lost range at short now? Maybe he won't be such a downgrade to Adam after all?
Exactly. This report confirms some things. But this isn't exactly "new" information that blows people's minds. It doesn't change much in the grand scheme of things. The point of the report is for future purposes, not for what happened in the past.
i'd say this report doesn't bring anything new into the light regarding tejada. when we traded for him, most people already had their mind made up that he had done steroids and well he probably did some kind of performance enhancement. it's unlikely that he gets suspended since he has no positive tests and there's no evidence he actually took the products he paid for. if you liked this trade i see no reason why you should change your mind now, unless for some reason you thought tejada was clean, and are currently shocked. i'm not a big fan of the trade to begin with but this doesn't make me like it any less.
The sports media didn't like Barry because he'd been such an a** to them in past years. Now he developed his attitude toward the press after watching how they treated his farther when he played but that's beside the point. I believe that when this crap started coming down, they (media) & MLB were only too happy to put his black face on the problem and run for cover. The fact that he was about to break the homerun record was an additional excuse to villify Barry because he was so widely disliked. Actually all of this stuff about this being a stain on baseball is a load of horse*****. This entire episode is on big attempt at CYA by MLB because they deliberately looked the other way and counted the money when Sosa & McGwire were crushing balls out of the park to the chorus from the cheering throngs. If they didn't give a damn about sanctity and integrity of the "game" back then, why should we do so now?
I think the biggest misconception is that the Mitchell Report is a straight list of people who used steroids. It's actually NOT the case. It's a written report about Mitchell's investigation of the link between steroids and players. All he did was document what he was told. So just because a player's name is mentioned in the report might not neccessarily mean that the player used steroids.
tejada will be fine, but it will take time. the report alleges his steroid use was in 2003 with the A's, so he could argue the same argument that all the players named (and the mlb itself) will be making: it's all in my past. this whole debacle is depressing. i still like miguel tejada, and i sort of suspected that he would be in the list since he has been shopped for so long and baltimore 'suddenly' finds a suitable offer coincidentally the day before he is implicated. it has to be at least considered, that maybe the orioles pulled the trigger now versus later because they feared his trade value would go down. i think they intended to deal him all the way, though. i'm not implying they dumped him to avoid embarassing the franchise or anything, just that the timing isn't irrelevant.
His numbers would have been 88 runs, 23 doubles, 22 homers, 99 rbi's if he doesn't get hit by a pitch and break his wrist, costing him 29 games as long as he maintained his rate pre injury. It was an injury that made his numbers low, not roids.
Hey...we just got a cheater for a shortstop apparently. What a great feeling! I don't know what to think of this club any more. I don't know what the truth is. Why would we trade for a guy whose name is on the Mitchell report? Did we just not know? Boy, I'm missing Everett now. I want him because I don't think he would ever cheat...and I'm all for that regardless of how crappy he is at the plate.
It wasn't just these 80 or so players, and i'm sure even everett took amphetamines once during his career, so he cheated as well. It's just not front page news like steroids. Also there will be no punishment for those names listed in terms of games missed regardless of selig's claims. Basically this report is not as strong as you might be led to believe.
Either they knew and still valued Tejada enough to make the trade or they're incompetent. I don't know which is worse
The runs would have been his lowest of any full season of his career. Doubles would have been his lowest of any full season of his career. His HRs would have been his lowest since 1999. His RBIs would have ranked 2nd lowest since 2000 (98 RBIs in 2005) His OPS was his worst since 1999. So yes, it may just have been a lack of steroids as opposed to injury that made his numbers low.
Baqui99, post #6498. Chance of ever saying anything positive about the Astros or ANY HOUSTON SPORTS TEAM about .0001%. Way to be a consistent jackass!
And yet he would still be in the top 10 SS in the entire majors. Actually... with those numbers he might have broke into the top 5. After all he was already in the top 10 without those 29 games.
