Im leaning toward liking the deal, but I am nervous about Patton going elsewhere. To me, some are severely overvaluing the things we are giving away. It might be fun to watch the Astros play this year not having 1/3 of the lineup (and sometimes more than that) be automatic outs. I'll be just as happy with 15-13 wins as I would with 2-1 wins. I'm concerned with the Astros future, but that has very little to do with this trade. I'll tell you one thing though ... Roy O is going to win the Cy Young this year if he can come back with a strong season and not be hurt.
Well, I guess no one wants a light-hitting defensive-minded SS after all. Does this now settle the age-old "offense vs. defense: which is more valuable?" question? EDIT: Meh, not a fair question due to Everett "not being the same player" after injury. Man, I wish Everett was 100% healthy so we could finally put this issue to bed once and for all.
I doubt it. The game has changed, but people still remember when Ozzie Smith was a no hit but awesome defense player. Those days are LONG gone. DD
I believe the concern is that AE lost range after the injury. And he is worthless if he lost range, no doubt.
From a FIBULA fracture? No one could believe that a small fibula fracture (the non weight bearing bone in the leg) could cause him to lose any range. That is just laugh out loud funny. If it was the Tibia, then ya maybe, but the Fibula? Nah...I think most people do not over value a good defensive SS. DD
talk to Cat about it. he said folks in the organization noted that he seemed to have lost range from the injury. yeah, i'm certain you'll dismiss it, though, so you can "prove" your point to yourself.
Are you kidding? If you think Palillo is an idiot, I'd hate to know who you think is worth listening to.
I'll clarify that there was concern, not that they know he's lost range. Obviously he wasn't the same at the end of last season, but that's to be expected; at a minimum it was always going to be 2008 before he was the old Adam Everett. But there are definitely people skeptical as to whether he'll regain his range. Don't forget about his chronic back problems, either.
could towles bat 2nd? matsui would be nice for the #8 smart baserunner for the pitchers to bunt him over. bourn towles pence berkman lee tejada wigginton matsui pitcher
I was also taking into account the Zone Factor in which he ranks 7th. He was better than Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez, and Edgar Renteria. All star shortstops who nobody says they lack range. If he is only marginally better than Jeter according to your Zone Factor, than he is only marginally worse than Eckstein, Cabrera, Rollins, Greene, Drew, Lopez, and Guillen(who they moved to first base). Julio Lugo with four fewer errors and the ability to hit the ball. According to the stats, he is an average defensive player.
Far from it. As long as it's people's opinions, especially people like you and I who are on the outside looking in, I don't ever see it being "settled". Fun for a discussion from time to time. Lugo hit better than AE, but I'd take AE. Tejada hits *way* better than AE, so I'll take Tejada. Now, I'm not sure I'd take Tejada over Dickie Thon circa 1983, but that's a different story.
Darrell Pitman's take over at Astrosdaily includes this little zinger: [rquoter] As of today, here's our projected 2008 lineup:

Michael Bourn CF

Kazuo Matsui 2B

Miguel Tejada SS

Lance Berkman 1B

Carlos Lee LF

Hunter Pence RF

Ty Wiggington 3B

J.R. Towles C

Our rotation will be:

Roy Oswalt RHP

Roy Oswalt RHP

Roy Oswalt RHP

Roy Oswalt RHP

Roy Oswalt RHP

Apparently, Roy will also close when his arm's not too tired. [/rquoter]
Why did Wade announce that Tejada would be batting third? You want to put your best hitter at third. Berkman or Pence would both be better suited to bat third.
The bigger concern to me, is why Wade is filling out lineup cards. Isn't that the manager's decision, and wouldn't that decision be made after spring training?
