I do like Giles and he fills a major need on this team. And we should reserve judgement until more moves are made... But would have been nice to get a corner infielder closer to the big leagues

McHugh did have a higher ERA through June than he did the second half, but that was mainly due to two very bad games - 15 runs in 7.2 innings. Take those away and his ERA drops from around 4.5 to around 3.4. Obviously those two games count in his stats, but he was pretty solid the first half and went 9-3.
I think some context here is important. The Astros just had an opportunity at very likely advancing to the World Series get pissed away by a shoddy bullpen and they weren't willing to have that happen again. This deal is expensive, but it's a "win now" kind of move that I think is defensible.
This trade is moronic. Giles basically has to be lights out for several years with us to even try to justify it.
Can't believe we gave up Appel. Seems like Lunhow got worked a little. This is probably one of those moments when the leaked info came back to bite the Astros.
No he doesn't... its moronic if you actually think that. He does need to continue to pitch as he has at the MLB level... which is more than you can say for any of the players the Astros traded.
I think the Astros have a serious talent management issue: 1. Let Delino Deshields escape for nothing 2. Trade Tropeano and Perez for Conger who's now gone 3. Lose Hader, Philips, Santana for an injured Gomez - To be fair Fiers might still work 4. Trade 3 potential 2016 pitching starters for a hopeful closer in Giles Not really feeling what the front-office is doing. Should be getting better talent in return for these prospects
Not as happy with the trade as I was before, but I really don't think the Astros gave up much. Obie is a 5th starter at most, and Appel will be lucky to be a 5th starter based on his output in the minors. Appel does have a long shot at figuring something out though and becoming a decent pitcher, but that is unlikely at this point. VV is the only real loss here and he has a history of getting injured.
Great use of chips. Phillips is more valuable than Appel at this point in time. You all are banking on a guy (who yes is a former #1 pick), but he hasn't performed. Chill. We are ok.
How did adding Appel and removing Fisher make this trade go from a reasonable/good one to everyone suddenly hating it? As noted, Appel has shown *nothing* as of yet in the minors, regardless of where he was picked. Last year, he had a ERA in the mid 4's and a WHIP of 1.40 with a fairly low K-rate and a really high walk rate.
This is true. it was an expensive acquisition to say the least. And it shows, that there was incompetence at work in the 2013 drafting by the Astros. I am hoping Musgroves emergence made some of these Guys expendable. Trying to find the silver lining.
Let's not forget that seven of their minor league teams made the playoffs, many with talent that Luhnow acquired. Giles isn't a 'hopeful' closer. He will be the closer barring injury. If the Astros had to use VV, Appel and Oberholtzer as regular starters in 2016, we would not be worried about them making the playoffs. They'd probably be fighting for that number one pick again.
Lol. You are a funny guy. I'm willing to bet Appel doesn't pan out. This is why I like Luhnow. Appel had value and he dumped it while he could. Another year of Appel being average to below average would have diminished value. I didn't realize that giving up Appel decimates the system .... please step off the ledge. LMAO! Some of you guys just started watching the Astros again to! Stop acting like you've been here through thick and then. Trust Luhnow.
More accurately, trading 2 potential #4/5-type pitchers and a #3ish potential pitcher for a hopeful ace closer. Assuming we sign another pitcher, then they were all pitchers who wouldn't be starting for us anyway. The Astros have a wealth of talent - they have to cut down on players and this is an excellent way to do it. They are consolidating their talent into less players.
Memo to Luhnow, you need a first baseman. Maybe the Cubs will give you their backup one for Correa and McCullers. And Luhnows spin to justify such a trade would make sense to a whole lot of people here on the board.
