he has to start getting ahead in the count and hitting the ball with authority up the middle and to the opposite field. i think he'll start hitting better soon, but he won't be hitting .350 like he was in may.

Yea, I wasn't expecting the .350 but it's as if he's just lost all that plate discipline he was showing early in the season. He's walked something like 3 times in the past month or so.

Check out his numbers for the last 7, 14 and 28 days: http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/split.cgi?n1=pencehu01&year=&t=b

And I believe those numbers have actually improved slightly in recent days. He's been off for longer than 28 days, going back to around the Rangers series. He has only 3 unintentional walks in the last 25 games after walking nearly as much as he was striking out for the first 2+ months of the season.

I read a thread from another site early in the season where the author wondered if Pence's apparent improvement in plate discipline was unsustainable based on how often he gets into 0-2 counts: http://www.crawfishboxes.com/2009/4/24/852273/an-observation-on-pences-plate

I thought it was nonsense at the time. A few months later, I'm starting to wonder if the guy was on point.
