Sometimes I think the Boys get bored. They've been good for the last 7 years, and when they play someone totally beneath them, they look disinterested. However, when the play teams that are considered contenders like the Yankees and they Mets, they dominate. The mariners are a case in point. We didn't take them seriously earlier in the season and we looked horrible. They start feeling good about themselves after this hot streak and we had to show them who was boss.

We have space for 13 Position Players

If we need Lee to Catch, he moves behind the plate and bring in Gurriel. Catcher covered without losing the DH.

So....starting 6 minor league games at 1st base (also 1 college game) is enough to displace a GG 1st baseman?

Also, it’s highly unlikely Diaz is a better hitter right now then Yuli. I want to
Upgrade the Yuli spot but it damn sure isn’t with Korey Lee.

This is not a replacement strategy. It is a tactical strategy to get Lee some ABs with Maldy behind the plate once or twice a week. At this point, Lee is only getting Double Header and Odorizzi starts. It's unintentionally icing Lee's bat.

Lee's numbers in triple AAA were worse than Gurriels numbers in the bigs.

I really wish we had someone that played the Evan Gattis role. A bat that could play catcher and first base sometimes.

Will that role be filled by Yanier next year? Even if we get Bell or Abreu as a rental, Gurriel is not signed for next season and neither is Brantley. Castro will be gone, if he's not already. Yanier was promoted to AAA, but I haven't seen his positional playing time info. Our Minor League gurus should be able to tell us that.

I could see Maldy as primary catcher and Lee as primary backup Catcher with Yanier at 1B/C either as primary 1B or in a bench role next season which would fill that Gatis role. I can also see Alvarez becoming the primary LF rather than DH opening up a primarily Hitting slot.

2023 plans are primarily interesting at this time because deadline moves will be done with this in mind.

I feel Brantley probably gets resigned if he wants it. He is having an elite year in regards to barreling the ball as well as K rate once again.

Still the same guy we got from day 1.

    Yuli though, yikes.

He is hitting 460 ft oppo bombs in AAA right now.

Yanier Diaz who is a better hitter than Gattis ever was.

Brantley gets the nod if HEALTHY, But the slow recovery has me concerned. Yuli isn't awful, but he's not good at this point. He's the definition of replacement level. Quite a fall from Batting Champ last year.

Evan Gattis played 1 game at first base in 4 seasons with Houston. He played 4 games at first base with the Braves.

Yeah! Gattis was mostly DH/C and then just DH.

Diaz is a good prospect and I’m excited about him, but hang on there. Gattis was a very, very good hitter. He was a career 110 wRC+ guy and that’s in a career riddled with nagging injuries and inconsistent playing time. 139 HR in 2662 pa; had he stayed completely healthy and been a career DH he probably would have had multiple 40 HR seasons. If Diaz has a career as good as Gattis then we should all be extremely happy about it.

Do you remember the year Gattis, outta nowhere, hit 11 triples for us? That was pretty strange.

Gattis only played 6 years but hit 139 home runs. He only hit fewer than 20 once. Also strange is that he never played again after 2018 when he clearly coulda hit home runs for someone.

I think in 23 we will see time split between Maldy and Lee with Lee's time gradually increasing such that by the end of the season Lee is the primary and Maldy catches one or two starters.

We will know a lot more about their plans for next season based on what Houston does at the deadline but for now I expect them to fill LF from outside, leaving 2 spots (everyday 1B, replacing Gurriel, and one bench bat spot, replacing Aledmys Diaz) open for a competition between Matijevic, Diaz, Valdez, Jones, Hensley, Leon, Julks, Goodrum, and Costes.
