If you’re talking about not bringing back JV because of the money - I wouldn’t use those saved dollars for another pitcher. Our young contract controlled group of youngish pitchers will be a top rotation for years to come. make another run at getting tucker to sign an extension. Then allocate a portion of the savings to signing a plus bat tool outfielder (Brantley replacement) on an overpaid 3yr deal and keep flexibility to take on salary at the deadline.
If McCullers goes on a rehab assignment Friday 22nd He would need to be activated Sat August 20. Game at Atlanta w/ 41 games remaining. Might make more sense to give him 1 more bullpen and start rehab Monday 7/25. Then he would be required to be activated 8/23 at Hine vs Twins.
Ideally you activate him on or after 9/1 due to rosters expanded a couple spots and you don't burn an option on anyone or be forced to DFA a contributor. As long as they are on the big league roster on the IL... playoff eligibility is intact.
With Lance coming off the 60 day IL, a roster move will have to be made to put him back on the 40 man roster, as it seems to be full. The Astros could just DFA somebody like Goodrum, move somebody else to the 60 day IL or clean up a 40 man roster spot by the trade deadline, but something will have to happen. As for the 26 man roster, if they bring Lance before the roster expansion, I could see the Astros sending Seth Martinez down and then bring him back up when the rosters expand, so they shouldn't have to DFA anyone there. Or a pitcher could get "injured" and take a quick trip to the IL.
Dusty is the ideal 'set up the franchise for the championship manager' manager... much in the lines of Bo Porter and Jimy Williams.
I'm starting to question Meyers defense in CF. He hasn't looked comfortable lately and isn't making plays that most CFs should be making and now he is struggling with the bat. How does Leon look in CF?
Thanks, I guess we're stuck with Siri as our best Thanks for the perspective, I guess we're stuck with Siri as the best defender out there, too bad he can't hit above the mendoza line
In all fairness, Siri would be the best defender on most other teams, too. Not sure if there is a team out there that has two outfielders as good defensively as Siri or better.
Are you also questioning Yuli, Bregman, Pena, Tucker, Diaz, Maldy, Castro, the pitching staff, Dubon, Chas, and I'm sure I'm forgetting somebody...?
He was actually just questioning the unproven center fielder. And yes everyone questions Pena’s defense.
WTF! I see this more with hitting than defense, but Astros fans have been spoiled. I get that Siri had a super amazing run defensively that makes every CF look like Evan Gattis in a tutu doing ballet. Not sure about Meyers hitting as he is still getting into things since injury, but his defense, while sub-Siri, has been great. If Meyers drops a ball diving or running at full speed, the average OF is likely either running to get carom off the wall or jogging up slowly to field a routine hit up the middle.
