That video was pretty cool, brings back a ton of memories...............it's funny that he's is whispering
Just can't believe all the memories I have from there and now it's just a shell of a place. It's a very strange feeling. A lot of really great bands played there, like Pink Floyd, Ozzy, and Rush, to name a few. Whether you were going to the rodeo or the Astros game or the Oilers game...the Astrodome made it feel "more"...especially earlier on. Every year that passed...it felt a little less relevant. Went from Eighth Wonder to "Where'd Astroworld/Waterworld go...I'm in trouble!".
And thats why we put the dead body in a casket and bury it in the ground when its time has come. Letting it sit there and rot away forever in plain sight (given that there is still not a single slam dunk idea out there after all these years) continues to take away any potential mystique or magic around its original state.
Its beyond an eyesore now it was by the time the Astros moved out and that getting close to 30yrs ago. This place should have been torn down before NRG opened up in 2002.
I think breaking into the Astrodome is about to be a yearly event now. This is probably the 4th or 5th time I've seen videos of people breaking into it in the last 10 years. It's getting to be I know what its interior looks like as much as I do NRG Stadium's.
I don't follow the Texans as much as I should, but ... are there rumors of them moving away from the current site and building a new stadium?
Apparently its going to cost the county a fortune to make necessary maintenance and tax-approved updates to NRG… and the county is likely going to ask both the Texans and Rodeo to help out as I guess the funds that are already appropriated for this (per the hotel tax) aren’t going to cover it… So yes, the Texans will either agree to a county-subsidized “renovation” of NRG… or when the county (or taxpayers) say no, they’ll do what they really want which is build their own complex and stadium on land that will likely be tax-free and likely in a county other than Harris. Plenty of other NFL teams have either already done this or will do this as we’re now approaching the next wave of NFL building. (And when all of this happens, you’ll now have both NRG and the Astrodome sitting there unused… minus rodeo season).
Wow. Had no idea about this. They should build it near Katy so they can bring all the evacuated people back.
This writeup has the Texans' lease ending just over the horizon in 2032. If there is a stadium remodel - update, then I would expect the lease to be extended some. Notice that the last sentence suggests that the Texans could eventually move on to another stadium. New Houston Texans president focused on renovating NRG Stadium, not building new venue The Texans are putting all their energy into finding a solution to renovate NRG Stadium in collaboration with RodeoHouston and the county, Mike Tomon emphasized. HOUSTON — New Houston Texans President Mike Tomon is four weeks into his job, but he’s already thinking seven years into the future. The Texans hired Tomon in January to lead the organization's efforts collaborating on the master plan for the future of NRG Park and negotiate the team's lease at NRG Stadium, which expires in 2032. As NRG Park discussions continue with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and Harris County, the Texans are focused on a renovation of NRG Stadium — not building a new venue — Tomon told the Houston Business Journal in a one-on-one interview. Additionally, Tomon said moving the Texans out of the Greater Houston area is completely off the table. The Texans are putting all their energy into finding a solution to renovate NRG Stadium in collaboration with RodeoHouston and the county, Tomon emphasized. He added that a new stadium is “not a focus right now."
Exactly. They’ll explore the renovation option because it ultimately is less costly for the team with rodeo/county picking up huge chunks of that tab (all profit for the team, however)…. And they’re not going to an entirely different market if it doesnt work out…. But using “greater houston area” is a pretty directed notion that they would likely move to an area outside the city-center, where they control/own all of it.
Yea, I think its all word salad at this point and they will eventually move, the new Texans Prez has been through this and IMO that's why he is here......they will stay in "greater Houston" so technically they are not fibbing The Astrodome was part of my childhood, along with Astroworld and it pains me to see it decay..........I have read reports that tearing it down will be $$$$$$$ due to the proximity to NRG and then nasty **** inside the dome but something has to be done, it's an eye sore. Leave the frame and gut the rest or get rid of it entirely......................it's kind of like the US deficit, we just kick the can down the road as if doing that will prolong the inevitable, at some point we have to pay up and suffer the consequences
It's actually pretty shocking, given Houston's complete disregard for history and its love of bulldozing stuff for new development, that it's still sitting there.
