Don't bet on it. They're out to make a decision soon. The other alternative was the Astrodome serving as a temporary home for MLS. From what I'm reading and hearing, those ideas are being shelved because this proposal has gained momentum. Public officials are happy to turn this burden over to private interests.
It's just a friggin' old building. Tear it down and start anew. Renovating seems cheesy, I bet they probably will keep the communal trough urinals.
They are doing the same thing in Austin with the Palmer events center ~ it has taken forever to get it going, but they are making it happen... However the Palmer center is tiny compared to the Astrodome. Palmer event center
For all those who would rather see it torn down... what difference does it make to you guys? The only people I see "benefitting" from it being torn down are Texans season ticket holders who would get more parking from it. It really doesn't affect anybody else, especially since they would be using private money to do this project (whereas a possible public venture would increase your tax dollars, if approved). While the question of whether or not it would benefit the public greatly as a hotel can be debated... at least it would benefit somebody (albeit possibly not as many as they're hoping for), and one of the most historical buildings in the history of Houston would be retained. Tearing it down benefits nobody here... they're not going to decrease taxes that have already been in place for 15 years plus (whenever they took out the bonds to pay for Bud's extra seats).
As far as I know, women do not possess the proper equipment to pee in a trough. I always figured the trough was an easy way to speed up the entir restroom process for males who do not want to spend the entire quarter standing in line to pee.
More efficient doesn't always make it better. Personally, I prefer to have a little elbow room when taking a wiz...thank you very much.
I know a guy who works for the sports authority. He told me about the MLS idea, but said that it didn't look good for that plan last month when he he told me about it. I think plan B for the MLS team is that they'll renovate some large high school football field. Speaking of the MLS, team, he said that in the meetings about marketing the team, it seems like they are going to aim for the Houston latino community. He then told me that some stupid ideas were thrown out for the new name and that one serious suggestion was actually the Houston Tamales.
Delmar? I heard the plan for MLS is to play in Robertson Stadium. Maybe that's just until they make the necessary improvements to Delmar.
Robertson is temporary. The long term soccerm field home will be Delmar Stadium, as part of an elaborate plan that would conincide with the redevelopment of Northwest Mall next door. The plan would also renovate all facilities (baseball, arena inculded) on the campus. Currently, HISD is building there new headquarters next to Delmar. A commuter train station/transit center would also be included in the NWMall's renovation plan as part of Metro running a commuter train along Hempstead Highway to serve the 290 corridor. And if TXDOT doesnt run their planned tollway for the 290 corridor in the middle of 290 (i.e.Katy Fwy), the tollway will then be built on Hempstead Highway. This was one of the main reason why soccer's preferd home will be
...Delamr, there are alot of plans that address the traffic issue this city has aimed for this area. To make the deal even better, the site is close to the city and where a soccer team will generate most of its fans. The fact that this project will coincide with NWMall's redevelopment doesnt hurt either. By the time this soccer facility opens at Delmar, this area will look totally different and for the better.
As long as they don't force Tia Maria's on Dacoma out, they can do whatever they want to Delmar and NW Mall. Man I love Tia's margaritas!
that's a great freaking restaurant!!! i used to work over that way off the north loop....tia's was a regular spot! great stuff!
