The thing needs a few little tweaks -- it's not like the dome is rotting with big chucks of metal falling from the roof. A giant air conditioned dome has to have some useful purpose in Houston.
Here's the scoop...Got a friend in the fire alarm business and apparently the Reliant people are beginning to solicit bids to upgrade the fire supression system. I guess the county has decided to take care of the violations. The rumors about asbestos are true...the dome is full of asbestos and tearing her down would cost the county too much money.
All I ask is one more walk inside her configured as a stadium. So many great memories in there. Jacking an aisle sign would be nice, but I really just want a fare chance to say goodbye.
I would hate to see it go...too many childhood memories in that area. Astroworld is already gone, and if the Astrodome goes...
speaking of this, I can't stand when media people say, "look how the new stadium dwarfs the dome". Hey idiots, reliant sits on top of the ground, the dome starts under.
whatever happens to the astrodome it needs to help make Houston a MAJOR city to compete with LA and NY !!!!!
i've been told that the gaylord-style convention center/resort is still being actively pursued and is a real possibility... supposedly they're trying to work a joint venture with the landowners at the former astroworld site to develop a "market square" type mixed use development and connecting the two.
Well, it may not "dwarf" the 'dome in terms of height, but it does so in just about every other way. <table border=1><tr><td><b>Astrodome</b></td><td><b>Reliant Stadium</b></td></tr><tr><td>height: 208'</td><td>height: 265'</td></tr><tr><td>1 million gsf</td><td>1.9 million gsf</td></tr><tr><td>65,000 seating</td><td>72,000 seating</td></tr><tr><td>115 suites</td><td>200 suites</td></tr></table>
I wish they would put something like Atlantic Station (in Atlanta) there, just minus the housing aspect. That would be great to have next to Reliant or a convention center. http://www.atlanticstation.com/home.php
