    I thought it was 12/22/12.

That's when they said the final Alien invasion of Earth will happen on the X-Files series finale.

It don't stink... no air in space! Oops, it'll stink if it gets here. We just might not be around to smell it. With luck, it'll miss. You can bet their crunching the numbers as we speak.

I'll risk repeating myself (sorry), but we need to be in space in a big way, and soon. A much smaller one zipped by recently within the orbit of the Moon. We saw it 2 days after it passed by. It would only have hit with the equivalent of a 100 megaton blast.

We may be laying waste to the planet with our civilization, in a gradual way, but it's OUR planet, messed up by us or not. We need to protect it.

What do you guys think would happen if it did hit? Do you think the world would come together as one to reestablish the human race or do you think the world would go to complete **** ala Mad Max? Just curious as to what you think.

By the way outlaw, according to this site
    http://mccc-union.org/NEWSLETTER/Aztec Calendar.html
"The Aztecs and Maya had a very accurate calendar over 1,500 years ago. It was more accurate than the one used in Europe. Of interest to us here is the fact that the Mayan calendar begins on August 13, 3114 BC, and ends on December 23, 2012 AD. In fact the Maya wise men of the Yucatan still predict that the world will end in the year "2000 and a little"."

Don't know if they are right are not, but thats all I got.

I think we need a colony on the moon, that way the species continues even if everything on earth is killed. Then, we fly back to earth and repopulate. Don't keep all your eggs in one basket.

We could always blow it to bits by firing a laser from Uranus.

    hTownhero,
Is that a Salival reference in your sig? If so, did you know that is actually a Timothy Leary quote? Another question, what are your major plans for this weekend? Do they have anything in common with mine, which are going to see tool on Friday in Austin, only more H-townified with the fact that they're playing on Saturday night over there?

Htown, there are too many variables. We don't know the composition of the damn thing. Is it a collection of rubble (so to speak), or a big solid rock. If it's a big solid rock, what kind? You got your hard (think Marble Falls) and your soft (think limestone). Where would it hit? Would it break up on entering the atmosphere? Where would it strike? What if it misses us and hits the Moon, Hydra? Would we get all sorts of stuff thrown at the planet? We could have loads of rubble in orbit, falling to Earth at "random" times for years.

The idea of a colony on the Moon is an excellent one, however. It has the raw materials, and possible water-ice, we could use to build what's needed to do something about the possible problem we're facing. This problem, or a future one that's whirling around out there unknown to us.

    Lot's of variables.

    DallasThomas-
It is most definitely a Tool reference. I'm a huuuuuuge Tool fan. (to be clear, I am a big fan of TOOL, not a fan of big tool's :D ) I moved to Atlanta though, and am going to miss the show. I saw them last year though, and you should enjoy the show.

    Deckard-
To be clear, I don't even think this thing is gonna hit us. If it did hit us I understand that there are a million different things to consider in regards to how much actual destruction it would cause. That said, lets say it did hit us and the ensuing(sp?) tidal wave, dust cloud, radioactive fallout...whatever reduced humanity to pre-industrial revolution life. Do you think the remaining humans would unify to rebuild or would guys start welding pikes on the grills of thier cars?

Well, Htownhero, when has humanity EVER been unified? I've seen the MadMax movies, more than once, and they're a lot of fun (if depressing at times). But they are The Movies.

Hopefully this asteroid thing is a tempest in a teapot. I've got kids, and I sure don't want them facing something like this (much less myself!), but we need to face up to the fact that historically, asteroid/comet strikes DO happen. We've finally reached the point where we can do something about them, if we prepare. And we should.

I think a real threat, if convincingly communicated to the world, could unify us as never before. But if we are unable to defend against it, if it's too little, too late... well, a disaster of that magnitude would leave us with "MadMax" as an optimistic scenario. Boy, I wish we were talking about Vernon.
