Del Harris comes to mind. Everyone keeps hashing out the names of former head coaches in the NBA as our only options to take the reigns. Im quite sure there are more than a handful of other assistants out there right now who have the credentials to be the next head coach for the Rockets. Thoughts?
Del Harris would be OK...PJ Carlesimo? Was he a good coach? I just hope we get a good coach...just wait and see.. NOT LARRY SMITH.
I wouldnt mind seeing PJ. Agreed that Larry Smith is a serious downgrade. I dont think he will be offered anything......
funny that the only assistant coach you mentioned is a former head coach. The only assistant I can recall being given recognition as hc material was Eddie Jordan(Nets), but I believe he may have signed an extension.
Good idea. Theres alot of good assistants out there who are ready to step in. Theres an assistant in Detroit, dont know his name, but when discussing head coach openings, his name seems to be a hot topic around the league.
Hiring an assistant is like drafting a foreign player. You're never quite sure what youre going to get. If you suck like Denver or Golden State, you take a chance and may hit the jackpot. Detroit was very lucky too. I doubt the Rockets will hire an assitant. This teams needs stability and a misfire at this stage would be disasterous.
Good point. But look at Bird, Ainge, Scott, Thomas, Cheeks, etc. None of those former NBA players had experience either, and they all have been decent if not better coaches.
Keith O'Neill from the Pistons. He's being hailed as the mastermind of the Pistons deefnse. Basically, he's a no non-sense disciplinarion. NOt sure what kind of offense he'd implement though.
Well he has certainly done a nice job with their defense. But their offense is just horrible. Maybe we could get him as head coach and get an assistant who specializes in offense..
Not really an assistant but I think that Avery Johnson will be a fantastic NBA coach someday. However, I wouldn't want the Rockets to hire him as a head coach since he has no experience.
The difference is that those teams were playoff caliber veteran teams who couldn't get over the hump and needed some guidance and cohesion. All those coaches were veteran NBA players who weren't necessarily good tacticians but good at blending egos and commanding respect. The Rockets are a much younger team who haven't made the playoffs. Hell, there are times we can barely run an offense. We need a teacher. Someone who can develop a system, instill discipline, instruct and lead.
Actually....on TV...they said he was a Mavericks Player/Assistant Coach. Anyways...he barely plays and is dressed up like a coach...and is always talking to the players. I think he will slowly get a better reputation. But I don't want him as the Rockets coach next year. Paul Silas or Jeff Van Gundy. Experience...reputation.. Avery Johnson..he's hard to understand. I don't think the Rockets players would listen to him.
Here is a more serious question, WHO WILL PICK THE COACH? Les? CD? Will Rudy be involved in helping them?
