i dont think hayes and dorsey have similar games. the best comparison for dorsey is young ben wallace. hayes is a great primary post defender because he's incredibly strong, and plays exceptional position defends, meaning he knows what his man is trying to do, where he wants to go, and he does not let the offensive player get there. hayes is very cerebral and is amazing at positioning himself as a help defender to draw charges or interrupt offensive plays. by contrast, dorsey is not cerebral. he's decent as a primary post defender, but it really limits his ability to use his primary strength which is athleticism and wingspan. he's much, much more useful as a help defender, because he has great leaping instincts and timing. he also plays the passing lanes, again, as a help defender. most of his highlights came in that role, as an "i never saw him coming" type of disruptive force. my hope is that dorsey will be what we all hoped that stro would be.
time to change that sig mang! on an unrelated note...I am really looking forward to all the confusion which would accompany picking up gerald green now... are you complaining about green or greene? oh green? ok, great...yea I think that guy sucks too...wait greene? yea thats what I meant, trade that dude for a bag of chips! moreyball can burn in hell!!!
Donte Greene was my OTHER dream pick. He already has NBA ready skills, although he's a tweener between the 3 and 4 position, but in a good way, because he can always develop his post moves. He has very good potential, I project his ceiling to be close to Rashard Lewis. The only thing I'm worried about is that he measured out to be 6'8.5, with an extremely short wingspan at only 6'9. Plus he also has relatively narrow shoulders. He also needs to realize about himself that just because your tall and gifted with a good stroke, doesn't mean you can start chucking from beyond 20 feet. Thats why he dropped off late in the season at Syracuse. If he works on his game and body a little bit more during this offseason, he has the potential to become a legitimate 3rd scorer for us. Dorsey is a solid pick in the 2nd round for us. Basically, I see him as a taller version of Chuck Hayes, which may mean Hayes might be packaged in a deal. I also have a feeling that atleast another of our power forward crop or from our point guard/guard crop will be included in a trade. Maaarty Leunen won't ever be seen in the NBA. But, obviously, that still leaves us shallow at the SG and SF position (the latter may/may not be filled by Donte Greene). But after what happened last night, and for that matter the last 2 years, I have in Morey to fix our "problems." Hell-he managed to cocktease the Spurs by taking Batum just so that they can't take him is EPIC WIN.
Dorsey's height doesn't necessarily doom him since as far as I know you don't dunk, block shots, or rebound with the top of your head. His 8' 11" standing reach is the same as: Al Horford's Jason Maxiell's and higher than that of: Joakim Noah Drew Gooden Kevin Love Paul Millsap Carl Landry Chuck Hayes so he's got a shot to do some things. From his highlight videos he reminds me of John "Helicopter" Humphrey, except taller with less hops. Same exact build though.
What you dont realize is that now our bench has players that can run. Dorsey is a big guy but youd be amazed at how he can run the court. On top of that, throw in a quick Aaron Brooks and an agile Donte Greene and there you have a bench capable of running the floor
Also, you have to like the fact that Dorsey pulled down 9.5 rebounds with 1.9blks and 1.1 stls.. per 25 mins
I think people are expecting too much from Dorsey. He's an interesting rookie, but you don't start cutting veterans to make space for interesting rookies you pick up in the second round. If he pans out, maybe next year someone gets cut to make space for him. I think it is as likely that he loses the numbers game on the roster count and is never offered a guaranteed contract.
Heres an example of how well Dorsey can run the court and make a block http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJPhFHzp2bU&feature=related
does anyone think greene is somewhat comparable to a young horry? or is his defense not close to that level?
His defense is OK. He might have problems with defending the small forwards due to his high center of gravity and lack of great lateral quickness.
I hear you load and clear. Chuck Hayes just boggles my mind. It's like he gets nervous being singled out on the line and can barely keep his own balance while making a shot. Just crazy.
Donte Green compares very favorably with Robert Horry. Horry was more of a rebounder playing center in college Green more of a scorer playing small forward. Horry was a slasher and spot up shooter Green not as much a slasher and a better shooter off the dribble
No, not really. Like someone said, Hayes on steroids, maybe without Chuckster's smarts, but hopefully coachable. We have a fine staff, so if the kid can learn, he can do so much more than Hayes. And why don't the Rocks hire Calvin Murphy to coach FT shooting, for crying out loud?? Dorsey could certainly benefit, as could several others.
you maybe right, but people are only expecting him to do what he did in college, rebound, block shots, dunk. not the ridiculous things we heard about guys like swift "tmac will make him an all star"
Sounds like a player that has star potential, and his nuisances can be coached up and develop better over time with experiences and training.
