I mean there have been assassination attempts on people that serve term limits as well and even people that are politically driven for say equal rights but are not affiliated with any branch of government beyond activism for a cause. Lifetime appointment or term limit doesn't seem to be a deterrent for someone plotting to murder you. Otherwise Abe Lincoln would have died for different reasons, hopefully from natural causes into old age. Likewise for James Brady, the person paralyzed that lead to the Brady Bill after Reagan was an attempted assassination. Or again activists like MLK or Malcolm X or Carlo Tresca or Viola Liuzzo or Jonathan Daniels or Harvey Milk. Or JFK and RFK.

Of course other people have been assasinated that do not have King like lifetime anointed governing terms. The question is are you more or less likely to be assasinated if you are both A. In a governing position ruling on decisions that impact the lives of the masses and B. In a lifetime appointed/anointed position?

I think the Democratic process gives the people hope that through their vote they can enact change. You take away that hope that people have a voice, and you are playing with fire, and you need more security as a governing leader. MLK was killed at a motel. Lincoln while watching a play with his wife. JFK while riding on the back of a convertible through crowded streets with little security measures.

These are NOT the type of examples of the security measures that a 3rd world country dictator would take... nor would it be the type of security measure Brett Kavanaugh would likely take.

Kavanaugh has even admitted he doesn't even feel safe going to eat at Morton's Steakhouse using the back entry, and sitting in an isolated booth. Obviously there is a problem here with the reason why both people like Brett Kavanaugh and his supporters believe he needs that level of security. To me it's an admission that the stakes are very very high to take him out, and that's a problem for what is supposed to be a bland non-partisan boring jurist position where he should be able to live a fairly normal life outside the court. A life that even Abraham Lincoln felt comfortable trying to live.

I go back to the RGB death rooting, and I think to myself how would Liberals feel today if Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito both died from Covid. There should be no position in a Democracy where you are happy that someone in a position of government dies. Either SCOTUS needs to back track from trying to govern from the bench, or Congress needs to act in order to water down the power of the Supreme Court. Brett Kavanaugh should be able to go eat a Steak at Outback Steakhouse much less Morton's Steakhouse.

Just a reminder that Lefty media are full of scummy hypocrites, as are their leaders and celebrity mouthpieces.

None of them care and barely acknowledge that a SC Justice had an assassination attempt on him, but will kick and scream for two years when a group of idiots stormed the capitol.

The country was literally on fire in the summer of 2020 after George Floyd, and LeBron was all about it. A white boy was beaten to death by three blacks and the Left couldn't care less, neither could LeBron. And now, the three criminals will not be charged with murder.

If the races were reversed on this, the country would be burning, yet again. Hypocrisy.

This post has a whole lot of misunderstanding and untruths in it.

The media absolutely covered the would-be assassin for days.

Jan. 6th wasn't only about a bunch of idiots storming the capitol. It was about people trying to overturn our democracy.

The 2020 riots were covered extensively. LeBron wasn't really that big of deal in that.

    Agreed, we should ban handguns.

These types of things are only going to become more common.

There is zero respect for government authority figures in the USA over the last couple decades. Trump by far made it worse with his claims about the SCOTUS when he first took office, with him making it acceptable to alter facts and believe in conspiracy theories. His questioning of the election results .... and now we have the Supreme Court writing opinions with disproven conspiracy theories in the opinions.

We all talk about right wing weirdos with mass shootings in churches and parades..... but the left wing weirdos are coming on strong too.

It is all really disgusting, and is a lot like things were in the early 1900's.

    Assassinations are bad.
Wanting to hang Mike Pence is bad.
Chickenshit death threats at public officials are bad.

It is a big deal..... it was a big deal when threats were made against Clarence Thomas recently as well.

Having said that, the reality is storming the Capitol in an attempt to kill Senators and having the sitting President claim election fraud are definitely connected to this.

Right now there is zero respect for the government within the USA and it is as bad as it has been since Post Reconstruction to the WWI era.

We have right wing weirdos shooting and killing people in mass shootings.

We have left wing weirdos shooting at senators on the softball field and trying to kill SCOTUS Justices.

We have President's breaking the law (Trump), and other ones (GWB and Obama) handing out "executive orders" left and right.

We have Senators stealing SCOTUS seats.

You reap what you sow and I suspect we will only see more violence from the left and the right.

Please explain. Otherwise you are making a point then that the Constitution..... gives them King-Like governing powers over political matters??? If you are going to say I'm wrong, you gotta back that up somehow.

I also am continuing to be surprised that you will not even entertain the idea of actually making SCOTUS judges more safe, and seem to be encouraging them to be in a position to be targets of political violence.

This is so true, and gets to the heart of the point many are trying to make, but few really want to actually have solutions for instead of just pointing fingers at each other to demagogue.

The problem is in a civil society, when the masses have been proven to have no voice or vote, and times are tough.... you will get violence. The violence comes when it's being shown that you cannot just vote in a year under a democratic system, and make changes to improve your life.

The reason why 1/6 MAGA nuts stormed the Capital is because they believed the lies that the election was stolen. This is the whole point. Undermining Democracy is really really freaking dangerous, and it'll be even more dangerous if the right gets their way and establishes a Victor Orban type of Autocracy... who is of course one of the key note speakers at CPAC this year.

If we do not find a way to re-establish that you do have power to vote and for that to actually make a difference, the violence on BOTH SIDES is going to get a whole hell of alot worse.

This is why SCOTUS rulings like overturning Roe are some of the most dangerous elements that we can step in. You have the masses being shown that 6 people who were not voted on by one single private citizen not in the Senate, all nominated by Presidents who lost the popular vote, who have lifetime appointments with no regulating body to oversee them, simply with one ruling decide to take away a fundamental right that will mean life and death for many, and affect every single person at some point in their lives in one way or another.

How we are shocked when those people are targets for political violence is pretty insane. And people here advocating for those people to have 3rd world dictator type of security instead of fixing the reason why they are targets in the first place is even more insane to me.

The thing is, Kavanaugh and Alito and Thomas are boring jurists. Their rulings are just that the words in the Constitution have the ordinary meanings in the English language, and that where that is ambiguous, look to what the people who wrote the words meant. It is the left that has both engaged in kinglike behavior such as making rules out of whole cloth (see the trimester system in Roe v. Wade, where was that in the Constitution?) and partisanship (criticizing the decisions in Dobbs, Heller, etc.). The left is mad that their super-legislature that gave them Constitutional rights to gay marriage, abortion, sodomy, contraception, etc. despite a total lack of any mention of those issues in the Constitution is defunct and instead people are on the court that believes words mean what they say.

I agree with you though that investing power in people is what makes them a target for assassination. That is why we should decentralize power as much as possible. If the federal government was only doing what it is empowered to do under the Constitution, it would be of little import who was President, Supreme Court Justice, or Congressman. The less power the government has, the less likely it is anyone will care enough to assassinate a participant in that government. Let's leave people alone and not take their money, then there will be no incentive to assassination.
