Haven't read the thread yet, but if we sign him, training camp is gonna be epic. Asomugha vs Andre every day. *drool*
Not to mention all our scrub CBs get lessons from the master of man coverage. Gibbs' best advice probably was "Hey KJ falling down would probably distract your assignment."
Seriously? He missed 2 games this season, and he can't force fumbles or get picks when he's only assigned to isolated pass coverage (something he complained about) and he gets thrown to 2.something times a game. That contract was set to fail. It's a possibility he re-signs, a percent of a percent IMO. Oakland set the bar for how much CBs make with that contract, are they just going to offer less? Or are they expecting Nnamdi to sign an identical contract with similar ridiculous stipulations? I wish it was April already.
He debated with Skip Bayless today on 1st and 10. Getting his face out there. I think he will go back to Oakland.
The contract wasn't necessarily set up to fail. He achieved those incentives the past 3 seasons. He's a very loyal guy, he's involved in the community, having went to Cal. I'd love to see him back. Oh and Hue Jackson will be named head coach of the Raiders probably on Monday or Tuesday. Its a foregone conclusion at this point.
What kind of contract do you think Davis offers him? I can't imagine him wanting to re-sign unless, he either receives more pay or he gets the same pay without fear of his contract getting voided at season's end.
You should look closely at his contract. His salary is insanely high, even for a top 2-3 corner in the entire NFL. It is basically in line with franchise QB money. And given that the NFL goes with a hard cap, it is a number that generally teams would never ever give out to a non-franchise QB. Oakland can easily give him a reduced salary, albeit a long term contract, and still out-bid every other team. This isn't the NBA, where teams can slot a max contract and have it be worth it. In the NFL, it's hard to allocate that type of money for a non-QB.
Good post, repped. I'm not sure what they'll offer him. ESPN just dropped another bombshell meanwhile...
Look at the remaining playoff teams, packers, bears, jets, steelers. When it's high powered offense vs. high powered defense, defense usually wins out. That's why we need Namdi. Our offense right now is championship calibre, get Namdi and use this offseason to get legit talent on defense and we will be on our way to a top 10 defense in the league.
SALARY CAP! http://www.texansbullblog.com/asomugha-hysterics-dojo/featured-articles/ (Also why I am a big proponent of the first round trade down....more players, less cap space...the cream will rise)
Yes, an elite DT "impacts every play" but a great CB that literally takes away half of a field does the same. If you can't throw to the side Aso is guarding, doesn't that "impact every play" as well? You have to see where Aso is lined up and throw to the other side. Fair point. I think if you make a run at Aso and lose out and settle for a 3rd/4th best CB, that's a win because the CB we land will still be a top tier CB. That doesn't mean that you don't even get in contact with Aso, though. You show some interest, talk with him about numbers, and if he doesn't come here so be it. But to shoot for the 3rd/4th best CB and end up settling for the 8th-10th best CB is hard to swallow, even if it is an improvement on last year's turd of a defensive secondary. This is a fair point. Given the Texans' FA ineptitude, though, I doubt that all 3 FA additions will be hits. I'd rather take 1 sure fire addition than 1 above average acquisition (ie Antonio Smith) and 2 merely serviceable players. I don't think it's the end of the world if the Texans don't get Aso, and it looks more and more likely that we don't snag him. However, I think it's arrogant (on par with Kubiak's "I can turn David Carr into a QB" arrogance) to think that we don't need to swing for the fences and at least try to land one of the game's premiere DBs.
But can't you stack the box and adjust your coverage to the other side and leave a guy like Aso 1 on 1 knowing that if they are going to throw it, hes probably not going to give up a completion? The Jets do that with Revis all the time
For a well-run team, this logic is very sound. It's also why you see the Patriots and the Steelers let players go all the time. If the Texans had the NFL equivalent of Daryl Morey calling the shots, I would be very on board with the Texans not throwing insane money at Asomugha. The problem is that the Texans are HORRIBLE in free agency. Yes, technically speaking getting a starting NT, LB, and CB > 1 superstar CB. But when was the last time the Texans splurged money on a player and got their money's worth? At least Asomugha is a sure thing. As in, assuming he stays relatively healthy, we can assume pro-bowl level performance. We can't really do that with the Ahman Greens, Antonio Smiths of the world.
