China ease past Kuwait as Asian Games basketball kicks off

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

¡¡¡¡ BUSAN, Sept. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- China eased past Kuwait 78-45 here on Saturday as the Busan Asian Games men's basketball competition kicked off one day before the official opening of the Asian version of the Olympic Games.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Yao Ming, top pick of the Houston Rockets in the 2002 NBA Draft, scored 15 points and pulled down 13 rebounds in 22 minutes to lead the Chinese, who were never really challenged in their preliminary Group A opener.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Despite the easy win, China's coach Wang Fei was not quite satisfied with the team's defense.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡"The players worked hard in the game," Wang told reporters after the game. "But we should pay more attention to our defense, especially the outside defense,"
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡"We should be more patient in the defense," he added.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Kuwait had quite a few times of shot-clock violations during the game and China did not have many chances for fast breaks.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Veteran forward Liu Yudong came from the bench to add 13 pointsfor China while Asian Games rookies Chen Ke and Du Feng each contributed nine.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Yao had seven points in the first period to lift the defending champions to a 18-11 lead over the much shorter opponents after the first period. The NBA Denver Nuggets' center Menk Bateer came from the bench to record six points in China's 20-3 run which enlarged the margin to 38-14 with less than three minutes remaining in the second quarter.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡China rested most of their starters in the fourth quarter as the victory was secured.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Kuwait could hardly find their shots before the towering Chinese, who had a average height of 2.02 meters, with air balls and missed shots from the Arabs spreading around the game.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡"The result was not surprising," said Kuwait head coach Draff Young. "It was a good opportunity for us to learn from China."
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡Kuwait shot 27.9% from the field while China shot 53.3%.
    ¡¡¡¡
¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡China will have a rest day on Sunday with Kuwait playing Hong Kong of China, the only other team in Group A.

Wang Fei is still his own negative self. I wonder if he learned all these player bashing from George Karl.:D

I can see why the coach was pissed, look at the turnovers against a way overmatched opponent. That one guy had 4 "errors" in 2 minutes! Yao Ming had 3 in 15 minutes. Plus they got outscored during garbage time.

That guy who had 4 "errors" scored 2 points, not played 2 minutes and Ming had 3 errors in 22 minutes. 15 is his points, not his playing time. :)

On that picture where Yao is being blocked, the angle of the picture and Yao's arm make it look a lot shorter. If you notice, Yao's arm is pointing towards the camera, and the Kuwaiti's player is basically steatched full lenght.

Yao's arms are short, but I don't think he'll be known as aligator #2. Of course Willis was #1.

And Willis was as solid as they come.

I think the problem was that I don't think anyone has seen too many pictures of someone blocking a shot by raising his arm palm-up. LOL. Height is a wonderful thing. Great picture!

Yeah, I recall people saying that about Argentina a few years ago... ;)

Ok, so I didn't, but you get the point...

That's what I was thinking. I wouldn't know why you'd show a pic of him getting stuffed, so I assumed it was him blocking.

Kinda look like they are going for a rebound, but it's not impossible to block Yao if he's doing a scoop shot. I would like to see someone block his hook shot.
