    Ashcroft, Evans resign from Cabinet
Attorney general declares victory over crime, terror
    BREAKING NEWS
MSNBC staff and news service reports
    Updated: 6:00 p.m. ET Nov. 9, 2004

WASHINGTON - President Bush has accepted the resignations of Attorney General John Ashcroft and Commerce Secretary Donald Evans, White House press secretary Scott McClellan said Tuesday.

“The objective of securing the safety of Americans from crime and terror has been achieved,” Ashcroft wrote in a five-page handwritten letter to Bush.

Justice Department sources have said privately for weeks that Ashcroft, 62, who has been a lightning rod for criticism by Democrats and civil liberties activists, was not likely to continue in a second term.

Aides described him as “exhausted” from leading the Justice Department in fighting the domestic war on terrorism since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. Stress was a factor in health problems earlier this year that resulted in removal of Ashcroft’s gallbladder.

Ashcroft’s former deputy, Larry Thompson, is considered a likely successor, Republican officials have said.

Evans, a longtime friend and confidant of the president, may be leaving for different reasons. Administration officials have said it was possible that he would be in line to succeed John Snow as Treasury secretary should Snow leave.

A name often mentioned for Evans’ job at the Commerce Department that of is Mercer Reynolds, national finance chairman for the Bush campaign, who raised more than $260 million to get him re-elected.

The moves came a day after Bush returned to Washington from the presidential retreat at Camp David, Md., where he spend the weekend discussing potential Cabinet changes.

Secretary of State Colin Powell and Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, two leading administration faces in the Iraq war, have also been mentioned as likely to leave.

Great news, at least the Ashcroft part. He is probably the worst idealogue in the Bush admin (with the possible exception of Rove) and the Justice Department can only improve in his absence.

I always knew he had a lot of gall, particularly after the raids on the medical MJ organizations in California.

He declared 'victory'? That's rich. isn't he something like 0 for 500 in terror-related prosecution cases?

Nutty or no, I just hope they bring in someone competent! (I didn't see perfect ad hoc spelling in my job description or Asscraft's, but okay).

B-Bob, love having you back (even more than seeing Ashcroft leave), but that spelling error is screaming...

Then why'd we elect Bush to continue our War on Terror?

This proclamation comes a couple weeks too late.

This is the right way to start!

If W would only get rid of Rumsfeld, I might be willing to give the W 2.2 another chance at the benefit of good will that I (and quite a few other Americans) felt he p*ssed away so recklessly.

I really would have come half way for the guy if he hadn't turned out to have run one of the most secretive and duplicitous administrations in the history of the job.

Rumsfeld & Cheney have hated the Freedom of Information Act since it's inception (when Gerald Ford took office after the Watergate break-in, Rumsfeld with his assistant Cheney, were vocal and aggressive opponents of the expansion of it's scope, when everybody else on the planet was soundly behind it.) And Ashcroft was their co-dependant enabler, promising to defend any and every FOIA censure, (and every other shady dealing) even when it was clearly wrong.

He was a potential Supreme Court nominee and athough he was pro-life he also looks like he leaned more toward the letter of the law rather trying to interpret intent. He will be a good AG. Here's one of his opinions ont eh Tex Supreme Ct.

No, it means he is going to never leave campus, start a crappy band, be an extremely annoying conversationslist and have no friends.
