The Dish: All-Star selections will be wild in the West
    Jan. 4, 2007
    By Tony Mejia

With just over two weeks remaining in All-Star fan balloting, the most interesting race for a starting nod involves the second guard spot alongside Kobe Bryant out West.

New kid on the block Allen Iverson has made up ground quickly on Tracy McGrady, pulling within 50,000 votes following his trade from Philadelphia to Denver.

What makes the stakes of the voting all the higher is the possibility that the player who comes out third stands a chance of being left behind altogether. It's clear two-time MVP Steve Nash will get a nod, likely leaving only two other reserve spots for guards. Iverson just got to the Western Conference and could ultimately be passed over for Tony Parker or Deron Williams, both of whom have had superb first halves and have been instrumental in their team's success.

McGrady has missed time with a back problem and has only recently begun to play to his full potential. Seattle's Ray Allen, Golden State's Baron Davis and Sacramento's Kevin Martin all have higher scoring averages than T-Mac.

Considering most of the NBA's talent has migrated West one way or another, this season's decisions could be the toughest in recent memory.

I don't care much if he makes it or not. I am not sure he would care all that much either, but his performance since Yao went down has to be helping his case somewhat for the all-star game.

Besides, while McGrady is leading his teams to wins, Iverson is leading his new team in Denver to a losing record...something for those 'thinking' fans who're voting for AI to start for the Western Conference team. Winning should be rewarded, and McGrady is a winner, before Yao went down (when we were on the level of Spurs/Mavs/Suns) AND after Yao went down (no Bonzi either).

Wow, that San Antonio article was horrible. I hope someone points it out to Tracy. That's bulletin board material!

About McGrady not caring if he makes the All Star team: as durvasa said in the first page of this thread T-Mac is said to be attending parties in Las Vegas so he will be there anyway and I imagine it would be embarassing not to make the All Star team.

I always vote for Battier as well. All in all, at the Toyota Center and online I have contributed about 100 votes to Yao, McGrady, and Battier.

It seems JVG agrees that Tmac is the premier decision maker in the league next to Nash. Out of this group I ranked him first. I may have to move Arenas up a notch in clutchness the way he is playing recently...

The only thing that keeps T-mac from being Magic Johnson re-incarnated is his amazing scoring/athletic ability and slightly lesser ball-handling skills.

Magic was never the highest leaper or best shooter... thus he compensated by working vigorously on ball-handling and passing. At 6'9, he could see the court amazingly (and provided a mis-match at PG when he did actually need to score).

T-mac's height sets him apart from the other "swing" guards... and it does play into his amazing court vision. If he wanted to, he could work on nothing but dribbling and be Magic 2.0.

I agree with everything you aid except the bit about his ballhandling.

Tmac has AND1 balhandling. Magic wishes he had the ballhandling of Tmac

I think the ballhandling is the best aspect of his game

Now, there are some of aspects of his game (like his overall mental toughness) that are not as good as Magic, but ballhandling is not one of them

I stoped the votes for TMac and Yao two years ago, I do want them to get the rests for the title run, not getting any injures in the meanless game.
