Same reason NY spiked, so many people travel to LA/NY from overseas, so many people living there travel all over the country. Restrictions can’t contain that type of rampant spread, especially since so much was embedded before serious restrictions were placed.

Make no mistake, those places would be much worse if they tried to react like Texas.

A paragraph of an email I got from Johnson Space Center Federal Credit Union today.

Recently, we have witnessed a rise in COVID-19 cases across the state of Texas and specifically in the Houston area. Out of an abundance of caution, we are proactively returning to drive-thru only operations for all JSC FCU solution centers effective June 18, 2020.

I hope they do this at the DMV before mid July, because I can't renew my license by mail this year. I really don't want to be in that place risking getting the virus just to renew my license. Ugh, I feel helpless with our Governor's lack of care about putting people at risk right now. I wish I could vote by mail too.

I'm wanting to get a passport now but that's apparently impossible as all their offices are closed. And I worry that when it reopens I'll be stuck in a crowded govt office all day.

Moral of the story: I'm an idiot for not getting a passport long ago.

I was hoping to wait this thing out til July, as far as renewing, in hopes things would get better. I never wanted to take the risk 3 months ago and it just keeps getting worse. Extensions on renewals should be made right now, especially for Texans who have had their licenses for many years.

Yea, I want drive through also.

There is a waiver. I don't know when the State of Disaster will expired (see here for declaration -> https://gov.texas.gov/news/category/proclamation )

The DPS considers a Texas issued card displaying an expired date valid if both of these conditions are met:
1- the expiration date on the driver license or ID card is on or after 3/13/2020
2- the current date is within 60 days of the end of the State of Disaster

    from DPS:

Select driver license offices will begin reopening by appointment only during normal business hours for driver license and identification card services starting May 26, 2020. At this time, the Department is limiting services to help minimize the spread of COVID-19. These services include:

    • Applying for an original Texas driver license (DL) or identification card (ID)
    • Applying for a Texas learner license
    • Driver license services requiring a skills exam, and
    • Applying for a commercial driver license (CDL) or taking a CDL skills exam
The Department has not resumed normal services. If your Texas DL, ID, CDL, commercial learner permit, or election identification certificate expired on or after March 13, 2020, you are granted a waiver for the expiration date for 60 days after the Department provides further public notice that normal operations have resumed. You may download a copy of the Verification of Driver License Expiration Extension (PDF) notice. All local and state law enforcement officials have been notified of this expiration waiver. When the Department resumes normal operations, you will be able to renew without any penalty.

Visit Restricted Driver License Office Services for additional information. The Department encourages all eligible customers to conduct all of their driver license services online.

Renewal transactions will not be conducted in any Texas driver license office at this time.

I sent a letter today requesting renewal by mail, so will see what they have to say. Somehow I doubt 60 days will make me feel much safer. It may be even worse then.

How are we supposed to eat our popcorn and drink our Icees?

I don't get these halfway measures. Let's do it all the way or not at all. None of this just the tip stuff.

    More fake news.

In countries keeping the coronavirus at bay, experts watch U.S. case numbers with alarm

health experts in countries with falling case numbers are watching with a growing sense of alarm and disbelief, with many wondering why virus-stricken U.S. states continue to reopen and why the advice of scientists is often ignored.

It really does feel like the U.S. has given up,” said Siouxsie Wiles, an infectious-diseases specialist at the University of Auckland in New Zealand — a country that has confirmed only three new cases over the past three weeks and where citizens have now largely returned to their pre-coronavirus routines.

“Many scientists appeared to have reached an adequate assessment of the situation early on [in the United States], but this didn’t translate into a political action plan,” said Thomas Gerlinger, a professor of health sciences at the University of Bielefeld in Germany.

Whereas the U.S. response to the crisis has at times appeared disconnected from American scientists’ publicly available findings, U.S. researchers’ conclusions informed the actions of foreign governments.

“A large portion of [Germany’s] measures that proved effective was based on studies by leading U.S. research institutes,” said Karl Lauterbach, a Harvard-educated epidemiologist who is a member of the German parliament for the Social Democrats, who are part of the coalition government. Lauterbach advised the German parliament and the government during the pandemic.

Regarding the effectiveness of face masks, Lauterbach added, “we almost entirely relied on U.S. studies.” Germany was among the first major European countries to make face masks mandatory on public transport and in supermarkets.

California opened up too. Newsome went from saying it will last months to open up in 3 weeks.

That said, California still handled this SO MUCH better than Texas.

Do Trumpanzees even care about rising case numbers? All I ever see them talk about is the number of deaths, a death count which many of them think is inflated.

Infuriating. Other countries used methods recommended from our research institutions to successfully flatten and crush their curves, but our idiot in chief refuses to implement them here.

My goodness what an absolute gong show the USA has ahead of it. I guess we're about to witness the largest public health herd immunity experiment in history.
