there’s no refuting this point. Hundreds of thousands of people decided that: progress on racial equality / police brutality > curbing pandemic > economic calamity with no real discussion, that was the computation. I hate seeing people saying only reopening will cause new cases and I hate seeing people saying only the protests will cause new cases. the virus doesn’t care and the probable truth is that BOTH will have caused more cases.
You can't be serious. I saw people with kids at the protests and saw Grandpa pushed down. Protests, parties, reopening, lack of social distancing, large gatherings, businesses reopening, and so much more all add to the spread.
And add to that: even if only 20-yr-olds protested, they have to then get groceries, visit relatives, pump gas, etc.

I'ts not an absurd calculation to weigh the scourge of 400 years of systemic racism - especially when the world is full of assholes who go around posting on the internet that white privilege is not a thing - and the chance to actually do something about it, against COVID risks and calculate that the chance to finally make some meaningful progress on the former is worth it. This is way, way different than a bunch of racist dipshits hopped up on a cocktail of QAnon and Fox News invading the local statehouse with AR15's "to get a haircut" or whatever stupid **** they were saying.
While I agree with you that the protests are an excellent vector to spread COVID, what exactly would you like the government or the public to do? We are talking about people protesting, not people going to the beach or not wearing a mask in Kroger.

Speaking for myself I would like more people to at least keep on wearing masks. From what I’ve personally seen it seems like about half of the people are wearing masks at these protests. I see a bunch of people doing medical at these protest not wearing masks.
I want to hope for this person's sake that just came out wrong in spite of her job description. It's sort of like an airline pilot saying "welp, let's get real folks, I can try to fight this stalled engine, but curved spacetime is the real boss around here so I'm going to have a vodka. Gotta live that life!"
