In the context of this thread, you chose a bad spot to start making fun of Canadians. Just saying.

Is there ever a time where we do not see a person, regardless of where they are from, as our equal?

To be honest, as an American, I don't care what most non-Americans think about our Presidential elections. We'll worry about pleasing everyone else once we are pleased at home again.

Where else was I supposed to start making fun of Canadians?

I didn't see the "Make fun of Canada thread" in the hangout.

Now I think rampant nationalism mixed with racist overtones can lead to disaster, and some of the responses in this thread were totally unwarranted and ignorant.

All of the stuff I said was completely tongue in cheek, you just responded as a reaction, I just think you should lighten up a bit thats all.

You didn't have to get so offended by some good natured-ribbing and start a 1 man task force to educate me on why I'm a selfish prick and we should all be ashamed to be an American when last night it seemed most of us were pretty damn proud of it.

    just sayin'

Are you aware we have American's fighting two wars overseas?

Are you aware we have trade agreements with other nations?

Are you aware that the world economy is inseperable from the American economy?

We don't have the luxery of ignoring everybody else.

    That is dumb.

They are equals. They can be concerned about what happens. The wording of the OP was a little annoying. America knows its responsibility to the rest of the world. We know what we are doing and know our responsibilities. We don't need someone telling us that they are proud of us from the outside because it is annoying.

In no way does that make anyone less than us because they don't live in our country.

It shouldn't matter who we elect, but how they act and perform once they are elected. His opinion does not matter to me as he is not American. Frankly he as a Canadian just insulted 46% of Americans.

    Absolutely.

We haven't really done a bang up job the last 7 or so years.

    Absolutely.

Oh I agree. This is going to be like turning a supertanker around, and that’s going to be a very important thing to remember. It will take quite a while for many of the changes to occur, especially given the state of the economy and the wars, but what’s most important, imo, is the groundswell of support for fundamental change that we saw yesterday. This election is only a milestone, and Obama was only the catalyst to get this movement rolling. Obama had it right in his speech. The victory really belongs to the people. If, God forbid, Obama should fall tomorrow, we need to understand that the movement was not just about him. It is about us, all like minded people who want to change our world for the better, and when his time as leader comes to an end, whenever that may be, we need new leaders to step up and pick up the torch, and of course during his time as leader he's going to need our help and support. To this end we need to keep this discussion going. The Blue Coalition needs to keep talking, keep thinking, keep working and being involved. There is a large number of us who passionately want change, in the US and around the world. That is clear now. This election was not an end. It was a milestone. Notice that Obama didn’t say, “yes we did”, in his speech yesterday. He said “yes we can”. The job is not over, and the same general way you Americans achieved the historic milestone you achieved yesterday is the path all like minded people around the world need to take achieve the next milestone on our paths.

The worlds opinion should absolutely matter. If McCain was elected and the rest of the world rejoiced, I'd have to reconsider why I voted for Obama. Maybe I wasn't seeing the whole picture. I think a lot of Americans do not see the whole picture.

    I already appologized.

It was a great joke. Good one. You got me.

How am I supposed to know its "good natured ribbing" when the people before you told the OP to STFU and go back to Canada. Then you tossed your little joke out in the middle of it.

Timing is one of you best attributes, huh? ;)

    I got **** to do, I'm out.

I didn't interpret the OP's words like some others. I thought it was supportive of America, but even more supportive of democracy. A Vancouver blog I regularly read talked about how she was watching the election all night and was incredibly excited to see Obama win. She compared it to the apathetic Canadian election and how envious she was to see democracy truly in action.

Maybe the OP worded it poorly (I didn't see it), maybe some people overreacted here. I will say, this thread escalated quickly!

We can ignore what they think of our elections. Hell why don't we just give them votes because their opinions matter just as much. I'm not worried about pleasing other countries at this point.

See, if you knew a little more about Canada you could make fun of fadaway because he’s from Newfoundland. Newfoundland has a very old, by North American standards, and very distinct society (there’s an inside joke for Canadians). Newfoundland only joined Canada in 1949, and while they’ve been very poor for most of their history in Canada, they’ve been equally rich in culture. As a rule they are very colourful people. (Although, I believe fadaway is from St. John’s, and they tend to be more like the rest of us). Now, however, they’re getting rich on oil money, so they’re getting to be just like us Albertans and you Texans!

So in your opinion, we should just say to hell with foreign policy, foreign relations and foreign diplomacy?

    Glad you're not in charge.
