Judging GM's by misses alone isn't very productive, since they will all inevitably come out looking bad. I mean, I could probably make an all-star team out of guys Jerry West could have drafted but didn't....especially if you expand it to "tradeable for"
This is the same GM you said was an "astute judge of talent." Many people before me have called the Camby pick a bust for that year...considering it was a #2. Certainly NOT an astute pick or a genius pick. Just a very safe, very mediocre, missed out on the great picks, type of pick. Measured in PROVEN trade value, when was Camby a star close to the stardom each of those others hit in their career. pfft. Name who Camby was ever traded for. So, people seem to be ignoring the Bynum vs Frye pick? How do you think that's going to pan out? Do you think the Knicks fans had a better pick recommendation.
Not as bad as Isiah came out looking by picking Camby that year. Hey, don't stretch what I'm saying to imply I'm calling Isiah a bad judge of talent. I'm just saying he's highly overrated.
Marbury stunk tonight. Francis had a great game. 14 pts 5-10 FG 3-4 FT 1-1 3pt 5 rebounds 8 assists 3 steals 1 turnover(That's pretty amazing for him) Curry had 24 pts on 10-15 FG. Did Francis get most of his assists from passes to Curry? Did he do a good job of feeding the post?
thomas hasn't succeeded at anything but playing. he took over an eastern conference powerhouse and failed to get anywhere in the playoffs. after being replaced, the pacers went back to being a powerhouse until ron artest happened. he was the commitioner of the CBA. it folded. he was the president and gm (i think) of the raptors. they have none of the stars which he made his name for drafting. if he gets another job in the nba i'll be amazed. maybe as a scout since he has a rep for picking good players in the draft. as haypartner pointed out, he doesn't allways pick the best players, but he still picks good ones.
I've said it before, before the new CBA came in, Steve would've still gotten a contract that size. It's just that other players would've gotten more. So did Steve deserve that contract based on the performance up to that point yes.
That was a fantastic article. Also, I think it's ridiculous to call the Camby pick a bad pick. Camby had injuries and his work ethic early on was questionable, but he was undeniably talented. And if you'll remember, the year prior there was some debate over who would go first if both Camby and Duncan came out. Yes, there were some players taken after him that ended up better than him. However, Jermaine O'neal was the only big man taken after him that was good. The Marcus Camby pick was not like picking Michael Olawokandi. Camby was as proven as they came and he had everything a GM could possibly want in a draft pick (except durability and work ethic, and that wasn't revealed until later).
so, you have the #2 pick in the best draft of the 90s. After two seasons as soon as Isiah leaves, you trade him for a 34yr old broken down Oakley who just came off a 9/9 season to produce a 7/7 season for you. Who the hell trades a good #2 pick after just 2 yrs for a 34 yr old Charles Oakley, unless it is widely regarded as a bad pick. yeah, that's a good pick. y'all just don't remember how much that pick set back Toronto. Yeah sure, Camby was proven in college like ...blah blah blah. I mean, Sam Bowie was proven too, at a #2 pick. And had better years than Camby did early...la la la. y'all just don't remember.
