The Republicans lost the elections because THEY WERE NOT CONSERVATIVE ENOUGH, not because people agreed with the Democrats. Conservatives wanted new leadership and understood they would have to wait 2 years before that would happen.

People aren't upset about the Iraq war because we are there, they are upset because we aren't winning. IE the Republicans are doing a piss poor job of waging war and people want them to wage it better.

Think about it, if the American people wanted moderates, the ultimate moderate would be a member of one part who acted like he was part of another.

As bad as a President as Bush has turned out to be, lets not dilude ourselves into thinking the American people have shifted to the left. The very word socialism still scares the crap out of the majority of people in this country without even thinking about what it means.

Spot on! Excellent post...My take is this was a wake up call for republican leadership to get it together better, and focus on being more conservative in the way and manner that they represent...Black and White...with less gray.

Pelosi has helped extend the view among those on the fence that the left is who we thought they were...From her willingness to endorse the twisted, diaboloical, and intolerant religion by the terrorists...to the misrepresentation of delivering Israels' message...to the warning of extreme taxes going up...etc.,...the left is falling for the trap of believing their opportunity means going more left. That will prove a mistake.

Your warning to the Dems is accurate, but Republicans need to take the same advice. If they think the public wants them to go further right, they will be obliterated in 2008. Maybe that's what you guys deserve. Bush will be the conservative version of Jimmy Carter, who accelerated the rightward shift of politics in this country in 1980 with his extreme incompetence while in office, which Bush imitates very well.

I don't have the numbers but look back to last November to find the answer to your query.
Let's see, Republicans approve democratic legislation that they would otherwise have been forbidden from doing (despite its overwhelming popularity in their home districts).

The overwhelming popularity of democratic initiatives, popular even in substantial excess of the democratic majority in Congress, if the massive crossover was any indicator, indicates to me that the House Republican leadership's views were not very popular. Again, this is one component of a gigantic pile of evidence of the hard right shift of Republicans, a shift which proved to far. Not a hard thing to understand.

Well, not hard for most. I only hope more Republicans suffer from the delustion that they were "not conservative enough" as somebody stated. Things will be much better if they continue being hard rightists.
