They showed an interview with his neighbor tonight, and she said he'd "just written 'Allah' on his wall" recently...

And the morning of the shooting he supposedly gave away all of his furniture and had also passed out copies of the Quran.

He may not have been connected to anything like a terror cell, but he definitely went off the deep end, and maybe even wanted it to be something that created more angst and stirred up more junk in the US against Islam since he had been picked on about it. Perhaps some strange retribution for what he'd perceived as hatred and persecution for his beliefs.

The authorities were raiding his home this evening and retracing his blog posts about suicide bombers being "equal to soldiers taking a grenade." He at least had a fascination with the concept of some of the terrorists methods of warfare.

I watched all those stories on wfaa in Dallas... some of it local news, and then Nightline.

I think they will know soon if he's connected to any group or not... my hunch is he's not.

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if the FBI and CIA don't start running more thorough background checks on military personnel whose names are not similar to Bob Jones and Dave Williams.. if you catch my meaning. It would be unfortunate, yet somewhat understandable.

These are strained times we live in. And I cannot blame people for becoming antsy about things. It is unsettling to hear of something like this. I'll admit, while I NEVER wish to hear of something like this taking place, I was almost hoping the name of the suspect would have been a thoroughly "western" or "anglo" one. Imaginations will run amuck now, no matter what is reported.

I really hope the dude acted alone. :(

It may not have been done in the name of religion but by the sounds of it religion is the reason he was upset. It would be upsetting as a muslim to be deployed to Afghanistan or Iraq but joining the military you know you are probably going to be sent somewhere you don't want to go. I hope for the sake of the world religion wasn't his main motive in this but in the end most people don't kill their work mates because they don't wanna do what the boss says. It could turn out to be something completely unrelated to religion that drove him but you know that with him being a muslim it doesn't matter, someone will just say it's the religion which made him act the way he did.

Be sure to put a yellow ribbon on your bumper if it is not too much trouble. I talk fairly frequently to ex military guys and gals who are suffering from PTSD. One of my closest friends is a PTSD therapist at the VA.

I sometimes lose patience with chickhenhawks.

You think the dead soldiers were rich?
As a doctor with 20 years in the military, he made more money than most of the guys he killed.

Just an FYI but its not totally certain that the blog postings attributed to the shooter are his:

    http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33704314/ns/us_news-the_new_york_times

    [rquoter]Disturbing postings
The Federal Bureau of Investigation had earlier become aware of Internet postings by a man who called himself Nidal Hasan, a law enforcement official said. The postings discussed suicide bombing in a favorable light, but the investigators were not clear whether the writer was Major Hasan. [/rquoter]

    Not exactly.

[rquoter]“He was doing everything he could to avoid that,” Mr. Hasan said. “He wanted to do whatever he could within the rules to make sure he wouldn’t go over.”

Several years ago, that included retaining a lawyer and making inquiries about whether he could get out of the Army before his contract was up, because of the harassment he had received as a Muslim. But Nader Hasan said the lawyer had told his cousin that even if he paid the Army back for his education, it would not allow him to leave before his commitment was up.

i just called you crazy. HIS religion (not necessarily the religion shared by others who would call themselves Muslim) seems integral to this.

This was a stupid argument on my part.

Still the government should have taken steps to prevent this. There were signs this guy was going to lose it at some point.

While I can sympathize with someone who took harassment for being a Muslim in the Army and wanting to get out - and perhaps he felt that most of the soldiers were anti-Muslim and racist in many ways...

That doesn't justify or make the crime any less severe.

This man was in a position of trust - a pyschologist.

he could have brought this all too light. He could have taken this to the press. There's a 100 better ways - a million better ways.

And not only that, he's going to give Islam a worse name now. Just a terrible thing.

leave it to a blind partisan to try to turn a tragedy into another partisan attack.

You should be ashamed of yourself. You and bigtexx just keep sinking to new lows.

Do you ever think about America or the families first before any chance you have to dig through YouTube and find someone Obama hater posting something you can spew on here?

Man, when are you going to take your cheap act out of here - all you do is piss people off.

If I were some head honcho terrorist hiding in Pakistan somewhere my first thought would be:

    Too early, my brother.

Whether we do or don't, they will make a connection.

depends on his brand of religion i suppose. i'm suggesting his brand of islam played a role in this...or at least it seems so given what little information we have right now.

that's why i'm not condemning a broad swath of it.

i'm saying that even within larger religions...people have their own religions from their own interpretations and influences.

his, i believe, contributed to this, at the very least....it may very well have been THE motivating force.

there are nutjobs who claim Jesus and would call themselves Christians who shoot up abortion doctors and protest funerals of homosexuals....they're morons. and their "religion" leads them to do that...and though we'd claim the same God in name, we're clearly not talking about the same god that Mother Theresa prayed to.
