well, even though I completely agree with the part of people keep on bashing him (in an unfair way), i disagree with the part of limitating his importance to the team right now and saying that he is gonna be a key player only in the future. I still think he is gonna be your third guy (behind tmac and scola... WELL tmac haters, he is gonna be back if not in superstar level, as an allstar one, and he will carry us to the playoffs). Ariza is an above average player right now... my espectations for him are to improve, but ,even right now, he is a 15 ppg (in 25-30 mins) player for sure... so, as the topic says, STOP BASHING HIM and wait for the 10 first regular season games.
It's the wearing #1 while being a 6'8"ish SG/SF that has also been acquired by the Rockets as part of their future desires to be an elite team curse.... http://www.fansedge.com/Images/Product/31-40/31-40367-F.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51H9+xiwRQL._AA280_.jpg
He is a younger, more athletic Battier type, but right now, Battier is better. To me, one of them needs to be traded...two defensive wings are a luxury. DD
We all knew that "expand my game" meant go to another team and jack up shots to my hearts content to get hella points I otherwise wouldnt get anywhere else... His 2's need work. Though he's gotten better the past 3 games already. 50% from the field. Too many turnovers at the moment forcing his offense. But he'll get into his role. Worried more about his injury history than his shooting.
Actually, I think that is what Adelman wants. Last season, we had two defensive wings as well. Maybe Adelman thinks that is the best for his system.
I gotta say, Trevor looked fantastic last game. That said, as Clutch has mentioned, having Trevor, Shane and Tracy does not make sense. Random thought. I think Speights over in Phili has all-star written all over him. I would take on Sam Dale or Brand's contract if it meant grabbing some of that youth. Thaddeus maybe? /Random thought. (I am hoping Tracy is traded. Trevor deserves a full year of learning from Shane...)
How Ariza played last game is how I envision him playing this season.. if he improves then awesome.. if he doesn't I already like what we are getting for how much we are paying him.. Look around and see who else gets paid the MLE and if they perform upto that.. As for Battier and Ariza, i like having two defensive wings.. makes the team more versatile and also helps the younger players learn defense and hard work ethics.. I'm not expecting Ariza to become TMac.. just a solid offensive player with great defensive abilities is more than enough!
I don't get why people don't want him to "expand his game". What do we have to lose this season anyway? Who is he going to hinder by taking more shots? If people haven't noticed, this team doesn't really have a star right now. Scola will likely get Yao's shots. Brooks will shoot a bit more. But are Battier and Hayes going to be aggressive on offense? Of course not. Ariza, like it or not, will get at least the 3rd most touches on this team behind Brooks and Scola. If you want him to stay in his role, then the Rockets won't be doing much scoring at all.
I never expect him to be more than a role player. If he reaches to the level that you have said,he will prove to be a real asset for us.
I may look like an idiot here and sound like a smart *** but I'm confused What is he developing into or what is he developing? Put up higher #s as a role player? Create & develop his own shot? I think he's nearly maxed out - as being a role player and nothing more. So is he or isnt he developing? Could you clear that up for me? Thanks(seriously)
Amazingly, Ariza is shooting 34% on 2s, and 47% on 3s in the preseason. I'd venture to say that the longer he dribbles the ball, and further into the defense he gets himself, the more frazzled and inefficient he becomes. If he can clean that up and instead shoot, say, 45% on his 2s and 40% on his 3s, then he'd be scoring at a rate of roughly 14.5 ppg (assuming he plays ~ 32 mpg) on about league average efficiency.
He's been in the league for 5 years and was the third or fourth option at UCLA. So no - he's not really developing and I think has pretty much maxed his potential. Not a bad pickup. But certainly not the 15 PPG guy a lot of here are expecting. A lot of the "bashing" was just correcting people's expectations.
he doesnt have the ball handling skills like say a kobe or even a mcgrady does....so he will never be like them...he will always be a spot up/slasher type role player...but i think he will be a good fit for us...he i pretty good at defense from what i have seen already in the preseason..i just want to see him play with mcgrady to see what he really has in store for the rockets this season..GO ROX!!!!!!!
Agreed, but since Ariza is part of our long-term future and we are not winning it all this year anyway, I say we keep Battier till the deadline so Ariza can learn as much as possible from him. Here's the value in keeping Battier for a while: - Battier trade value would be up at the deadline. Trading him away does not affect our capspace in 2010. - Ariza can keep learning from him in practice and games. That's valuable because it wil greatly reduce the impact of losing Shane. - Gives T-Mac time to work his way in. By the deadline, he should either be firing on all cylinders or thinking about retirement. - T-mac's return hopefully should reduce the pressure of creating offense and allow Ariza to focus on cutting to the basket, fastbreak points and putbacks. - Overall, gives Ariza time to get comfortable with the whole team and system. Not to mention that they are covering a big hole at SG right now. Their experience is needed till T-Mac, Taylor and Budinger become worthy of NBA minutes. If we can get someone good and young for Battier (whose contract runs till 2011 I believe), it would make this an even more attractive team this coming summer.
I am very glad this decision does not depend upon you, DD. Luxury or not, we can have both. Les is willing to go over the tax, why not for role players who could be more. Trevor is a ROGUE out there on the court, steals everything.
That is what i suggested as well, we know once he tried to expand his game beyond his capabilities the more out of tune and inconsistent he was, y'all should have expected that much. He is a project player and already playes up to his contract i don't see what the problem is. I'd say throw him into the pack of wolves and let him improve and adjust his own game. Some players have done this before like Turkaglu for instance. To me he is in the same mold as Kersey and i think that is what he can peak too. I would be very, very impressed if he was most improved player.
lol, you think he's maxed out? really? are you his physician? by my estimation he's at the very minimum: extremely athletically gifted 6'9 with a 7'2 wingspan making $1,010,000 less than shane this season according to coaches and trainers he has a strong work ethic; so who are you to say he couldn't add more abilities to his game? he only needs to add 1 solid offensive move each season and he would have a full arsenal by the time he hits his prime (age 27-28). never mind that he can: hit a spot up 3 is great at playing passing lanes likes to cut to the basket (fits into a motion offense like ours) enough quickness to harass some guards on defense I think you don't realize how good this kid can become. YES, he is developing. WOW. note: I am in no way saying that this kid will become an allstar -- he doesn't need to either. he has a lot of potential though and, I think he's going to turn some heads this season.* *health permitting ---- rockets players that are also considered developing: aaron brooks carl landry every rookie/2nd year player on the roster rockets players that are technically developing: everyone else
