OK. I am normally the first one to jump down someone's throat for playing the race card, generally because I've seen some of the severest and ugliest forms of racism up close and personal, and often when someone cries "racism" here in the States it's simply not. But seriously. "Arian nation"???? To casually bandy that term about, thinking it's a cool nickname for anyone, betrays the severest ignorance of what those who have embraced that term believe and the atrocities that have been committed under that banner. Or it betrays something worse, if one is choosing to just ignore all that. It's not something trivial like 38-35 or Rosencopter that we can just get over and move on or joke about. Genocide ain't funny, folks. And for these groups to embrace that term, and identify themselves by that term, in an obvious nod to the Nazi movement of the early 20th century lumps them in the same category. Holy freaking crap. May I recommend that you get a hold of yourselves and look at life with a historical context a bit wider than perhaps last month. I realize the context of this discussion is entirely trivial: sports -- but there are some things that aren't funny in any arena. Casual, trivial, recreation, business, home, anywhere. You have your freedom of speech and you can throw whatever terminology around you desire. And I'd fight any war on any soil to defend that right for you. But this is just stupid. And sad. nah, that was last week. But that's how I see it, man. I hate the whole "PC" nonsense, but some things you just don't joke about.
How easy is that for you to say? And by that question I mean specifically this: are you a part of a group that was targeted in the last 100 years in a genocide? Because I'm not sure anyone who lost loved ones in SE Europe, or East Central Africa, or Cambodia, or Nazi Germany feels like laughing about it. It's easy for you and I to sit back and say "laughter is the best way to move on." Laughter is always a wonderful medicine, but there are tons of ways to find a laugh without trivializing something like that.
I like "A-Train", but I realize that probably feels cliched to some. I guess it's the big band/jazz fan in me.
oh..because he's black he has to be associated with jazz huh? I do like Barbarian. And Carry'in Arian. Off the wall. Bananas Foster
Anthony Thomas already had that nickname. He won Rookie of the Year and then slowly faded back into obscurity. Bad karma.
MSN speaks the truth. I don't give a damn that Arian is black, the title still evokes a concept of white racial dominance and the genocide of Jews and non-whites. For people whose grandparents and relatives were among the victims of the Holocaust, the trivializing of the incident to try to be clever in a BBS is wrong and reflects a complete lack of maturity. I don't expect maturity on a board, but if people can be demoted or banned for flaming individuals, I think it's well within reason to modify the title of this thread. You can still talk about the player.
