Austerity measures in Argentina have caused a sharp rise in poverty.

I’m not saying that Milei’s plans won’t work, as @AroundTheWorld’s posts show that markets are responding positively to the changes.

However, the USA is not in the same place that Argentina was when they elected Milei. Trump was elected mainly due to inflation hurting mid and lower income standard of living. If we actually do see massive government cuts like Musk and Vivek are proposing, those same people are going to be very, very unhappy.

If you drive around and just pay attention to all of the massive office buildings in and around DC, there are trillions of dollars worth of companies that rely on government contracts to employ millions and millions of people all over the country. These companies are no joke and will come at any sort of cuts that affect their bottom line any way they can to survive.

There are also huge government programs that need more investment to be fixed, like the disability claim approval process at the SSA. Right now it’s largely a cumbersome manual process that requires a lot of people. Deep cuts are only going to hurt the people who are waiting on money, not help.

Do you have the source where this graph and its headline were published? I see that they are citing INDEC as the source, but the reason I am asking is that the headline speaks of "triple digit inflation" under Milei, which is clearly not true - they are stating an incorrect fact, and then trying to pin the incorrect fact on him. He has been reducing inflation.

Mobile now- will try to remember later.

Regardless, my point was that austerity measures like this really hurt the poorest people- the people who voted Trump into power at least in part to help them pay the bills. These people don’t have money in the bank, liquid assets, credit or any other fallback plans. They live hand to mouth.

    https://www.reuters.com/world/ameri...shing-half-argentina-into-poverty-2024-09-26/

The article doesn't mention inflation, but includes the chart which says it. The IDEC report I found does not seem to include mention of inflation (just searching the Spanish word for it in the report). The Reuters version goes back further in time than the IDEC report I found.

It is from The Catholic University of Argentina.

The AP has a story on it.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) — Poverty levels skyrocketed to 57.4% of Argentina’s 46 million people in January, the highest rate in 20 years, according to a study by the Catholic University of Argentina.

The findings quickly unleashed accusations between Argentina’s former Vice President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner and the government of President Javier Milei, who came to power announcing a series of shock measures aimed at tackling the country’s severe crisis.

About 27 million people in Argentina are poor and 15% of those are mired in “destitution,” meaning they cannot adequately cover their food needs, according to the study released over the weekend.

The UCA’s social debt observatory is considered an independent and prestigious research space whose reports on poverty cover a larger geographical area than those conducted by Argentina’s national statistics agency, INDEC. It also applies a methodology that addresses the problem with a more multidimensional approach and its findings are seldom questioned by politicians and economists.

According to the center’s latest report, the increase in poverty levels in January was partly due to the devaluation of the Argentine peso applied by the Milei government shortly after taking office on Dec. 10. This resulted in an increase in the price of the country’s basic basket — which includes food, services and non-food goods — and the basic food basket.

Working- or middle-class households that do not receive benefits through social programs experienced the greatest impact, the study concluded.

inflation could slow in the coming weeks, the incidence of rising prices will continue to impact Argentinians and poverty would hit at least 60% of the population around March.

Milei, an ultra-liberal economist who is implementing a series of shock measures, including a sharp reduction in public spending, said that the fact that “six out of every 10 Argentines are poor” constitutes “the true inheritance of the caste model,” which is what he calls the political class who has governed Argentina for the last 20 years.

He later said that his government “would give its life” to bring about a change in the socioeconomic reality of Argentina.

Former Vice President Fernández de Kirchner (2019-2023), who also governed between 2007 and 2015, attributed the poverty problem largely to the policies of conservative President Mauricio Macri (2015-2019), who succeeded her in office, and to the adjustments applied by the current administration.

She said that, starting in 2018, “with a debt in dollars and the return of the IMF (...), we went backwards.” The reality presented by the study, Fernández de Kirchner said, “shows that today we are worse off than in 2004.”

The government responded to Fernández de Kirchner asking her to “be silent.”

Presidential spokesman Manuel Adorni said Monday during his daily press conference, that the former president is “one of the most relevant figures in the last 20 years of Argentina’s decline.”
