As an economist, Milei is a vocal proponent of the Austrian School. He has critiqued the fiscal policies of various Argentine administrations and advocates for reduced government spending.

Politically, Milei has been variously described as populist, right-wing libertarian, ultraconservative, far-right, and ultraliberal, while he identifies as a liberal libertarian, aligning specifically with minarchist and anarcho-capitalist principles.

Putting aside his economic libertarianism, which I can’t comment on. Referring to the opposition as infecting “parasites” and talking about their philosophy needing to be “erased” from the “minds” of Argentinians is not so encouraging. Good luck, Argentina.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/16/world/americas/javier-milei-pope-francis-argentina-election.html

Javier Milei, a far-right libertarian leading the polls in Argentina’s presidential election this month, has made a lot of contentious statements in recent years: Humans did not cause climate change; people should be able to sell their organs; his nation’s currency “is not even good as manure.”

But, to many Argentines, he has done something far worse: attacked the pope.

In 2020, Mr. Milei, a self-identifying Catholic, called Pope Francis an “imbecile” and “the representative of the Evil One on earth” because he defends “social justice.” Last year, Mr. Milei said the pope “always stands on the side of evil” because he supports taxes.

    ATW'S TYPE OF GUY

I don’t see him helping to get their economy back on track but I do know desperate poor people will do anything even if it doesn’t make logical sense. This lunatic won’t be the savior they need but if he is sincere and can get some of those reforms passed he may have a chance.

I reserve judgment. Dude seems eccentric, and I don't agree with some of his policy views (like on abortion), but I agree with him directionally on freedom vs. socialism and on his assessment of woke leftists. And Argentina has been governed terribly for a long time, so they need to try something else.

He is insane - but endearing until you realize he is serious. Really charismatic and a dynamo of energy… problem is he says things about getting governance ideas from his dogs and relies on a mystic and believes he fought in the Roman Colosseum.

Just an absolute weirdo - but there is a 50% chance Trump is elected President and he is insane too.

I agree with you that Argentina is an absolute mess. It’s also easy for us to live in a very wealthy country with opportunities and criticize the choices the voters in Argentina made - they are desperate for change and he promises change.

the left will run the Trump playbook at Milei

I expect impeachment and/or prosecution shortly after he takes office.
